White House: No Social Security crisis
White House: No Social Security crisis

By Michael O'Brien - 04/13/11 01:35 PM ET

President Obama doesn't believe that Social Security is "currently in crisis," the White House said ahead of Obama's highly-anticipated fiscal reform speech Wednesday afternoon.

The administration said it would entertain reforms to enhance Social Security's solvency, but none that smacked of privatization or slashed benefits for current or future generations of retirees.

"The President does not believe that Social Security is a driver of our near-term deficit problems or is currently in crisis," the White House said in a fact sheet previewing the president's speech.

1. Would have been more pwerful statement if it included WHY they do not believe that.
However, as is, nice shot across the Republican bow.

2. Maybe that will be addressed in the ACTUAL SPEECH...
instead of the pre-speech fact sheet?

3. Nobody says it's currently in crisis.
It's like my household income. It's not currently in crisis. On the other hand, I have no job prospects; my wife is quitting her job as of the end of June and has no job prospects. Do we have a financial crisis? Hell, no.

Is it pretty clear that come August we're going to be hurting, bad? Hell, yes.

Surely he's not so dumb as to misunderstand what's said. Then again, the alternative is a kind of linguistic malice, coming from one who wants to foster a more civil dialog. So we have stupidity, malice, or hypocrisy. Again, bad choices. Good red meat mete for the faithful.
