The Democratic Congressional Campaign committee took in an eyebrow-raising $19.6 million in the first three months of the year and cut its debt by more than half.
The committee, which was $19.5 million in debt in January, is now $8 million in the red. That’s a much more manageable sum, and will likely allay fears of debt posing a major obstacle to House Democrats in 2012.
Just as encouraging to Democrats: The DCCC’s quarterly haul of $19.6 million is higher than the $17.2 million it raised in the first quarter of 2009, when Democrats held the House majority.
The DCCC finished March with $4.6 million in the bank.
The quarterly report is the latest sign of strength from the House Democrats’ campaign arm under the leadership of New York Rep. Steve Israel, who took over as chairman this year.
