CHICAGO (Reuters) - President Barack Obama urged Democrats on Thursday to help him "finish the job" at the first events of his 2012 re-election bid, appealing for higher taxes on the wealthy and a rejection of Republican budget policies.

Obama, seeking to reignite the energy of supporters that propelled his candidacy in 2008, said "extraordinary progress" has been made during his two years in the White House but "we've still got work to do."

"If you're just as fired up now despite the fact that your candidate is a little older and a lot grayer, then I have every confidence that we're going to be able to finish the job," he said.

The Republican approach, he said, is that "we can't afford to do big things anymore" and says to the underprivileged, "tough luck, they're on their own."

As soon as he comes out with a consistent definition of what the job is.

His speech yesterday was a great step in the right direction and I hope the enthusiasm it has inspired among real Democrats isn't wasted in some compromise "deal" with Boner and his idiotic minions.

Hopefully he has realized he has the American people on his side, regardless of what he hears from the liberal media.

Just do what he implied he would do in his speech.

This means no watering down of Medicare, no arbitrary tweaking of SS, end of the destructive tax cuts for the wealthy, and spending cuts across the board (no program is exempt including defense).

I'm really not asking a lot and you know what? Even if he caves again I will still support him.

I don't know where in my post you read anything about a primary challenger because I read it again and it ain't there.

16. I'll go for a return to Clinton era tax revenues. Clinton brought us

prosperity despite being hounded non stop by the GOPers. We don't need to cut anything, just get rid of waste and stop all these wars and tax corporations like GE, who pay zero taxes. Fair taxes for everyone.
