Obama to the GOP, "You think we're stupid?"
(Note, it is being reported this morning that the following Tweets came via a hot mic that the President did not realize was still broadcasting into the press room where sat one lone reporter. That reporter? Mark Knoller, perhaps the least biased journalist in the entire corps. Was it an "accident"? Conspiracy theories abound. But I have been reading Mark quote the President's remarks as I listened to them live for the last two years and he's as accurate as they come.)

During a q&a session with campaign contributors, Pres Obama confided about his private budget talks with GOP congressional leaders.

Obama says he told Boehner and McConnell he wouldn’t allow them to cut funding for Planned Parenthood with a measure in the budget bill.
http://twitter.com/#!/markknoller/status/58751238140989440

Obama said he challenged GOP on Planned Parenthood cuts. "If you think you can overturn my veto, try it. But don’t try to sneak this thru."
http://twitter.com/#!/markknoller/status/58751279173865472

Obama ridiculed GOP moves to repeal health care reform "by nickel-&-diming me in the budget. You think we’re stupid?" he said he told them.

Obama said he expects GOP to use the Debt Limit vote to try to enact their political agenda "under the guise of cutting spending."

1. They are going to try to make this a huge scandal--
Personally I like this kind of talk. AND he's allowed to say this to his contributors. This morning on WTOP ( A cbs affilaite that Knoller appears on regularly) they interview Candy Crowley and she even said this should not be a story at all. (Then again, she said that, we'll see what her producers on CNN say....)

I have not one problem with this, and I am sure Knoller documented this word for for word.

12. Nothing scandalous about what he said
Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 10:46 AM by Proud Liberal Dem
Most Republicans and their hate radio worshippers get away with PUBLICLY saying worse/crazier things and nobody apparently expects Republicans to act "bipartisan" towards Democrats, so........? If he's talking like this- even if it is behind closed doors- it's actually rather encouraging IMHO. Kind of puts to rest any debate about him "caving" to the Republicans or trying to be their BFF.

22. Obama knows that many Dems. are angry at him. He also knows
that he has to work hard at getting their votes in Nov. 2012. Unlike in 2008, he is
the president now. Whatever he says while campaigning, this time he has to keep
his word. What choice does he have but to toughen up, if he hopes to win?

It couldbe that this was part of his strategy: He has the excuse that he had tried
to bend over backwards to accommodate the Rebubs, but they didn't respond.

2. This was just reported on bloomberg, and of course they are trying to paint the President as
unreasonable.

The truth is that Obama had better stand by those remarks, I suspect he will. You can take only so much before you say enough is enough

This will not only help him with his base, but also with independents, it shows the leadership that people have been craving for

I have no doubt that the media will try to exploit this, but to their surprise, as long as the President stays firm, not only will the republicans lose, but the corporate media will be in for a huge surprise

When the issue actually is about ideas, and the REAL differences between the parties, the independents will run from the republicans

4. Well ... In all fairness ....
Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 09:03 AM by Trajan
I have not been duly impressed with the judgment and strategic thinking of the Democrats for some time now ...

They have been constantly outmaneuvered in the political and rhetorical sphere ... for decades ...

They keep bringing peashooters to gunfights ...

They appear wimpy and spineless, like they haven't the guts to fight for their beliefs ....

No wonder the playground bullies have been teeing off on them for so long now .... We have forgotten what a strong, fearless Democrat looks like ...

17. DOES the GOP "think we're stupid"?
Heck, yeah, especially since Florida 2000, and they've been treating us accordingly ever since.

19. Not being a conspiracy theorist...
...I don't think it was an accident.

What better way to get his message covered by the media? They wouldn't do it if he said it publicly, but THIS...well HELL...THIS is a story!!!

Great way to keep the left motivated is by ridiculing the right! But...shhhhhh...don't tell the teapers.

20. They have chutzpah
I've met people like this in life, too. They think nothing of asking. They figure, let's at least try. So they demand something outrageous. They never get that and lose respect and maybe come out with less than they could have. But once in their lives they got something they didn't expect just by asking, and so they try it every time, not realizing there was some fluke there. So yes, they think we might give them their most extreme desire if they only just verbalize it once.
