Surprise! Gov. Brewer vetoes AZ birther bill
I, for one, did not see this coming.

http://m.apnews.com/ap/db_16026/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=hJMX2r0S

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed a bill that would have required President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove their U.S. citizenship before their names could appear on the state's ballot.

The bill would have made Arizona the first state to pass such a requirement. Opponents had warned the bill would give another black eye to Arizona after last year's controversy over the state's illegal immigration enforcement law.

"I do not support designating one person as the gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate, which could lead to arbitrary or politically motivated decisions," said Brewer, who was secretary of state until she became governor in 2009.

"In addition, I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for president of the greatest and most powerful nation on Earth to submit their 'early baptismal circumcision certificates' among other records to the Arizona secretary of state," she said. "This is a bridge too far."

5. Probably a fiscally prudent decision
Whatever her reasons, it was the right thing for her to do.

9. Glad to see Brewer
has a couple of functioning brain cells left. AZ is already the laughing stock because of this. Maybe the bad PR got to her. I read somewhere that the business community is losing a lot of money due to people chosing not to visit AZ or do business in AZ.

10. I'm not surprised--it's follow the money, the costs of litigation....
If AZ passed this law, all President Obama would have to do would be to provide a copy of his birth certificate for qualification.

If The Sec of State said no, then it would probably take the DOJ about 15 minutes to obtain a federal TRO based either on the Supremacy Clause, or the Full Faith and Credit Clause.

Not only would AZ have to pay out the wazoo for this litigation, BUT it would also have to pay to litigate the dipshit birther army of lawyers who would attempt to intervene on behalf of the Defendants---

Now, imagine the cost of litigation when you have to defend not only your own law, but you also have to spend money telling the court why Orly Taitz should not be on your side....

If the Sec of State said yes, then imagine the shitstorm of litigation from said birther legal eagles, wanting to uncover the conspiracy---the Governor would be up to her ass in paperwork....

It's a no win for Brewer.
