4. They are setting Romney up for a "comeback" a la McCain

Everyone is talking up all of the crazies and also-rans but when it comes down to it, it will be Romney. They need someone who seems to be a legitimate contender in order to get Republicans to the polls in order to regain the Senate in addition to keeping the House. A too conservative candidate will do so poorly in the polls that it will depress turnout.
