69. What percentage of Democrats are liberal?
If you split the population into three groups- Republicans, independents, and Democrats- and then split Democrats into two (maybe three) groups- conservative, (maybe) moderate, and liberal- how many people is that?

Not fucking many.

You know, the ones for whom any deviation from the one true politics is anathema.

39. There is no such thing a one true politics
Union member, worker, voter, activist since 18 and all I've seen in the 40 years since is the left destroying itself by squabbles over what is or is not the most "right on" thing to do. I am sick of the fundamentalist left dragging everybody down by fulfilling all the paranoid predictions of the RW noise machine.

I am sick of the left abandoning the voters in the centre because the centre wants something less extreme than what is being held out to them by the left. I have seen the left hamstrung until, in the UK, they put Tony F'n Blair in power. The left then hero worshiped him letting him drag the party so far to the right that the Conservatives became the party of the centre.

Be Left but be real. Get elected then make it profitable for the talking heads to push your views. Make sure that prejudice and violence from the right is properly reported as terrorism. Make the right sell their souls to the workers.

44. Fundamentalism is in the eye of the beholder.
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 08:24 PM by Pholus
So, your first reply didn't mean anything?
"You know, the ones for whom any deviation from the one true politics is anathema."
So your definition of "fundamentalism" relied on the phrase "one true politics" which you later claim does not exist. Does that mean that you agree that there is no "fundamentalist left?"

Anyway, funny how similar we are in background with very different perspectives. What I've seen in 30 years since my first vote is that the left is destroying itself in trying to hew towards a fictitious center DEFINED by the RW noise machine.

I'm sick of the center left abandoning the core principles we held for 60 years because they think that a move to the center will strengthen the people's love for us. It isn't happening because we have the nutball right who at least defines some kind of vision while our side cuts our own throats in order to compromise and appear centrist. Well guess what, I guess the GOP IS the party of business after all -- after all we come out like chumps in every negotiation we make.

Can't you SEE how they do it? They make the demand they need, a demand they would love but think they can't get and then they make three insane demands that they know damn well would destroy the f'n country. Then our pushover mushboy centrists decide to compromise and give them the first two items. Guess what? That's more than the minimum they were looking for in the first place! So, buoyed by success they do it again. And amazingly they win again! And so it happens again, and again and again!

Why isn't the center flocking to us then? Well, they see the nutballs get what they want and the mushboys who gave it to them and what they think is "well heck, at least the nutballs have the courage of their convictions -- they stand for something" No wonder we got our teeth kicked in in 2010. We couldn't even articulate what we did *right* for fear of offending the GOP. So spare me your comments about "fundamentalist" ideology because the couple times we actually stood our ground we saw the other side cave pretty quickly. I personally am sick of centrist fundamentalists who have forgotten how to win.

Finally, your last paragraph is not disputed by me. Except that my "get real" is said probably more in exasperation than an exhortation to shut up and accept the status quo.

22. I would prefer the term Proud Liberals...That was the majority until the Democrats weenied out
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 01:53 PM by Armstead
The "one true politics" swipe is the saddest stereotype I have seen in a long time.

Liberalism was the mainstream, until democrats started selling that basic political philosophy down the river. It is still thge philosophical underpinning that a majority of peopel hold today, if you ask themn what they really want on specific issues.

If you bothered to get your head out of the sand, you might realize that the "professional left" includes people with a wide range of ideological perspectives, from mainstream liberal moderate to more progressive.

23. True
He's been far better than Bill Clinton, the best Democratic president since LBJ, and even he had Vietnam (as Obama has Afghanistan). He's certainly better than Bill Clinton, who was himself better than any possible Republican.

Has he done everything I would have liked? No. Presidents are constrained. There are things I think he would have liked to do, but found impossible, such as closing Guantanamo Bay Prison, and other things he ought to have done that he didn't even bother attempting, such as prosecuting US war criminals. I'm disappointed in these things, but he is who I thought he was: an electable Midwestern moderate Democrat. I think some folks didn't realize who he was, thus the ire.

43. Anyone who's job it is to be on the left.
Radio hosts, bloggers, journalists, etc that espouse left-wing views and beliefs, and those opinions make up the majority of their content and are what brings in readers/listeners. The opposite end of the Professional Right, which, as you can imagine, includes Rush, Hannity, and everyone on Faux News.

That's how I interpret it anyway. Some have taken it to mean anyone on the left who is critical of democrats, regardless of whether or not they are getting paid for it.

52. I'll cop to resentments
Sure I've got a lot of resentments -- and they're not hidden.

I resent the fact that the democrats have been complicit in the successful campaign over the last 30 years to consolidate the economy into the hands of a few excessively wealthy and powerful corporatioins and a tiny but dominant oligarchy.

I resent seeing the GOP define issues and the democrats respond in a tepid "sorta have problems with that" way.

I resent 30 years of hearing democrats make excuses for ineffectivness, while the GOP forges ahead and rams through their agenda.

yeah, I resent those things....So There!

people talking trash about Obama isn't realy a big deal all presidents go through this. We all know it and he knew it too but he still wanted the job so he has to take what goes with it. What's really hard is being unemployed with no benefits and being in danger of losing your house. Let's have a little perspective here.
