President Obama has authored a tribute for Time Magazine to injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), on the occasion of Giffords's having been named one of Time's 100 most influential people in the world.
The annual list, released Thursday, contains brief tributes for each of the people selected, along with images (this one was used for Giffords). Obama's byline under Giffords's name reads simply "By Barack Obama."
Obama writes that Giffords "may not have been a household name" before she was shot in Tucson in January, but that she has "long been admired by people of all political stripes."
Giffords, Obama says, "embodies the best of what public service should be: hard work and fair play, hope and resilience, a willingness to listen and a determination to do your best in a busy world."
She is "a model of civility and courage and unity — a needed voice that cannot return soon enough."Obama also made the list in his own right. His tribute is authored by Stanford University professor David M. Kennedy.
