Hispanic population growth could realign South's politics

By Halimah Abdullah | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Huge surges among Hispanic populations in the Deep South could mean a political sea change over the next two decades, as immigrants become naturalized and they and their American-born children register to vote, political and demographics experts say.

The states with some of the largest percentages in Hispanic population growth make up a large swath of the Southeast: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, according to an analysis of the most recent census figures by the Pew Hispanic Center.

In all those Republican-dominated states, the percentage of Hispanics nearly doubled.

In Georgia, that population grew by 96 percent over the past decade, according to the Pew study. Only 23 percent of Georgia's Latino population is eligible to vote, compared with 42 percent nationwide, figures that reflect the state's high numbers of young Hispanics and new immigrants, said Mark Hugo Lopez, the associate director of the Pew Hispanic Center.

2. Just about every nonwhite ethnic group in the USA now have majorities voting for Democrats
It didn't used to be that way (Asians), and it used to be closer among Hispanics.

But a funny thing happened when Republicans became the party that was against anything that seemed other than white:

It seems like nearly all the other groups noticed and their votes started to reflect that.

Nobody had to be taught by white Democrats that Republicans were gunning or them.

They figured it out before the White Democrats did.

(I think your post is a bit patronizing)

and that won't ever be our side!

and those too pissed at the current Republican leadership. The issue of Hispanic growth would force them to the polls in 2012.

Don't assume that all Hispanics are democrat. I am in FL and most Hispanics are one issue voters, religion. Voting for democrats is allowing abortion, teh gays to marry, et al.
I am Hispanic and unfortunately, many of those that willingly vote Republican do so for religious reasons. Those are your usual low information voters that like totalitarian republican talk. I've know Hispanic Rush listeners too and one particular senior citizen that is not even a US citizen but told his family to only vote republican, as he says, "all the way".., and no, they are not Cubans. Others, are totally disconnected to politics and those I believe are the majority. So no, increased Hispanic population does not automatically mean more votes for liberals.

14. Your points are all very valid. In addition, getting Hispanic turnout
to vote is always a problematic issue. Many of them come from countries where voting is seen as nothing more than a sham to keep the status quo. Coupled with one-issue voting and the increasing Rethug war against ALL Hispanic voters (not the so=called 'illegal' ones), many Hispanics just don't see it being worth the effort to vote. That's what needs to change in order to bring about the realignment the new demographics indicate should occur.

29. I'm hispanic, live in Fl and totally disagree with you
the only Republican Hispanics I know are Cuban. No one I know votes over Religion. We are big on immigration and are quite aware of their racist crusade against us

Hispanic Rush listeners? How do yoy think their numbers compare to Univision viewers? Please, the comparison would be ridiculous. And Univision is always reporting how racist Republicans are with our community.

I think this is great news for Liberals

32. My "sample" might not represent your view of Florida...
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 04:24 PM by Lost-in-FL
but maybe you might be interested on seen como nuestra gente get to vote against their own best interest out of sheer ignorance. I realized throughout the years that many in my community are no different than your typical a-political american family and, like them, are not particularly interested in politics but in TMZ-like information. Furthermore, It is not like there is a public education system exclusively for hispanics, or a library system, etc. Hispanics get to offer their kids with the same crappy educational system of other kids their age, in which evangelicals certify the science curriculum for the students and parents blame the lower overall school performance on hispanics.

You are right about the "Univision" viewers tending to be more liberal. Of course, unless favoring the preservation of the "Virgin/Mother/Whore trinity" throughout Latin-America with their mischaracterization of women in their programing as counting as being "liberal". Funny how once one recovers from the "in-your-face" misogyny of their "programación familiar" (family oriented programing) the next thing you notice is that there are few to non-black hispanics represented and all people with small eyes as "chinos".

When it comes to the immigration issues, hispanic republicans only need the "I am not like them" excuse on the immigration issue to vote republican. Their attitude on immigration is surprisingly similar to that of the Log Cabin republicans who throw their community under the bus with their votes for the republican party. Those that cherish their long "european" ancestry :sarcasm: need not to feel threatened by immigration policies or being concerned with showing their birth certificates, others less "european" or "mexican-looking"... you are on your own.

With all of Sarah Palin's nativistic vomit during the 2008 campaign, you would think that my close friends would choose Obama because of the racism of the right. Well, that was not the case. They voted for Obama under the same premises libertarians voted for Obama... because of the economy, because of Bush's bad reputation and the war or simply wanting to be in the winning team. Those who ended up sticking to the McCain/Palin ticket did so because only liberals take food stamps, or because they are "gawd fearing sons/daughters and defenders of them fetuses" against those commie liberals or because they were members of the republican aristocracy of hispanic conservatism reminiscent of the Latin-American colonialism.

"Florida will NOT be turned BLUE by the hispanic vote" I will be very happy if that happens but I am not holding my breath.

12. What a bullshit article
Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida......EACH of these states easily has more Mexican-Americans than Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee combined.....yet they are all almost hopelessly republican controlled. Even California, one of the bastions of liberalism, has shat out Ronald Regan and Arnold Schwartzenegger.

Having a large Hispanic population does not mean the state is Democratic. It's pretty much the reverse when you think about it.

15. A post was deleted which might clear up the mystery.
I think it might be safe to say that Hispanics lean conservative because of their strict religious upbringing. (Keep in mind, that the Catholic church in Latin American countries has done a better job of spreading the concept of Christian giving and helping thy neighbor, than it has in the U.S.) Which means that unless they understand the right-wing's agenda, they will become prey to the right-wing family values propaganda. Conservatives have the upper hand here because they can keep pushing their anti-gay agenda which resonates with machista views.

The Left might be able to reach Hispanic women because the one aspect of the culture that does not translate very well into American culture is machismo. This applies to first and maybe second generation Hispanics. I conversed with a woman who was second generation who worked in agriculture in Homestead. She said that even though I was in the backseat of the car, the fact that she was married and riding in the front seat of the car with my father would be viewed as inappropriate.

would automatically imply more democratic voters is wishful thinking in my opinion.

As many hispanics in Florida as IS, the state is an undisputed republican bastion. Sorry, I have to break it to all here but the state is not purple as the media want you to believe.

Many of South Florida hispanic representatives are in the majority Republican. Most Cubans, Colombians and Panamanians I know are Republican leaning and even apolitical types find pride in calling themselves conservatives. Puertorricans? Mostly democrat due to the bad reputation the word "Republican" has in the Island, BUT are usually conservative leaning too. "Republican" in PR is equated to "corruption', "racism", "imperialism" and "CIA operatives". Some PR politicians go to great lenghts not to be seen as Republican.

The most pro-Laissez Fair/union busting freak/police-state-loving SOB, the Puerto Rican Governor Luis Fortuño, a registered "Republican" was endorced by equally ruthless ex-Governor, Pedro Rosello (a registered democrat). He is currently implementing policies that make Paul Ryan and Scott Walker look amateurish.

23. Expect your post to get removed.
Too much truth. And the Democrats will never claim the Hispanic vote until they push aside their PC fears and get down to the root of the culture.

Most Latin American countries have a stark difference between the rich and poor. This has resulted in a special relationship between the two. The rich will acquiesce to a certain degree of socialism. Partly through government funded projects, and partly through religion. If they didn't they would probably find their end at the tip of a machete or a military gun because of the abject poverty that exists in the country.

However, there is an upside for them. They are able to live a Libertarian lifestyle in every other way. That's what nepotism and cronyism lead to. A place where people can cut deals without much worry about government intervention as long as they spread the wealth. And this is what the rich get in return for their acceptance of a socialistic redistribution of wealth. An opportunity to exploit the resources and the cheap labor for whatever scheme they care to indulge in. It keeps them enjoying a high quality of life, uncontested.

And this is where our country is headed.

Read quickly before the mods remove this.

25. I almost forgot the best part.
Edited on Sun Apr-24-11 03:41 PM by The Backlash Cometh
Imagine moving up to the U.S. where the cost of living is astronomical compared to what they're use to. Where they cut back is socialistic expenses, which the Republicans have described for them as anything that raises taxes. And the Republican's Libertarian viewpoints are something they're already familiar with. An easy sell.

As for the Republican's racist views, they are hardly bothered by it where Hispanics are a dominant force.

I think the only way to break the spell is divide and conquer. Democrats need to show the middle to lower class Hispanics what they can do for them. Unfortunately, the biggest thing, education, is something which is getting pummeled right now.

They do absorb the talking points. I had a tussle with one of them through e-mail. He kept telling me that I should be like my father because my father worked hard. And I told him my father was a civil servant and if it were up to the Republicans, he'd be out of a pension, living off of his children with very little dignity. The guy insisted that he had nothing but respect for government workers. And then I told him that he most not be aware of what the Republicans are up to. A month later the pension issue erupted.

So, this government pension issue may be another weakness for Republicans because government employs a high number of Hispanics in areas where they dominate in numbers.

33. I appreciate the informed perspective
I can't imagine why true info would be removed. I grew up in a 'Spanish/Native American' household. The women were incredibly strong but supportive of a Victorian style patriarchy. Even though my grandmother had 'worked the jobs of 2 men'(family saying) and supported her whole family during the Great Depression grandaddy still ruled. And we girls were taught and expected to grow up to be 'good wives.' ;)

22. you don't understand. Having a large minority population is much different
than having a population where the minorities are actually the majority.
That is the future all across the South.

That is what frightens Teabaggers and leads them to shout about wanting their country back.

If you can't see this happening now, give it a year or two. It will become obvious.

They are scared shitless of what will happen when all these young Hispanics are old enough to vote.

The whole Teabaggin' movement is a pre-emptive lashing out at this inevitable eventuality.

These are the waning days of the White Majority in the United States, and the Teabaggers instinctively understand that.

31. And that's why we have the Arizona "show me your papers" law. It's also why
we are having these "birther" bills in Louisiana.

I love this one from my home state of Georgia:

Not only must one show a birth certificate. The parents must BOTH be U.S. citizens. They BOTH must provide a birth certificate.

So, that's THREE birth certificates: yours, your mother's, and your father's.

It's pathetic!!
