Hey America, I’m sick and tired of African American men not being good enough for you
I have been dealing with a lot anger and pain today so I had to write this from the heart.

From my blog: http://blog.windycitywatch.com/2011/04/hey-america-im-sick-and-tired-of.html

Hey America, I’m sick and tired of African American men not being good enough for you

On behalf of President Obama, Muhammad Ali and my deceased grandfathers its time to start treating Black men with the same respect afforded to white men at birth

By John V. Moore
@johnvmoore

I am really pissed off and quite frankly hurting. Today President Obama released his long form birth certificate to answer questions about where he was born. I can’t remember this being an issue for any other American president or presidential candidate in recent history (there were some concerns about Martin Van Buren & Chester Alan Arthur). While Obama’s opponent in 2008, Senator John McCain, was in fact born in Panama, it is President Obama who was forced to prove he was born here.

The message to all people of color, especially African American men is: “You are not good enough.”

That’s my take away and the only way to change my mind is through actions, not reassurances that this has nothing to do with race. This is a very sad day in America and everyone needs to reflect on what just happened.

Despite growing up apart from his mother, being raised by his grandparents, graduating from two Ivy League colleges, serving as the first African American President of the Harvard Law Review, being a community organizer, teaching at the University of Chicago Law School, serving in both the Illinois and United States Senate, being elected the first Black President of the United States and more importantly being a role model for American fathers, he still had to prove he was “good enough” to be considered a real American.

He was held to a different standard, he was “othered.” The legal document he previously provided, his Certificate of Live Birth, was “not good enough.”

While its easy to marginalize the birthers, led by Donald Trump, the media deserve a plethora of blame. The fact that they kept giving him a platform, analyzed the accusation and re-aired it, is despicable, just despicable. The media is complicit in this birther hysteria, there is no justification for the airtime Trump got for making outlandish statements about Obama’s birth certificate. Dan Rather got fired for mistakes he made reporting on George W. Bush’s military record, while NBC pimps Trump’s birtherism for ratings for “The Apprentice.”

Why one standard for Rather and one standard for Trump? My take away is that we are being told that Obama “is not good enough” to be afforded the same respect Bush was.

Can anyone tell me what documents that George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Baines Johnson and John F. Kennedy were forced to provide regarding their birthright citizenship?

Now that Obama has directly addressed the birther issue by presenting his long form birth certificate, Trump has moved on to Obama’s academic records, demanding that he release them. The implication is that the President was not smart enough (read “good enough”) to get into to two Ivy League institutions. Many African Americans in college or corporate American must constantly prove that they are qualified and not some affirmative action beneficiary. When white folks get into college or get jobs it’s assumed that it was based wholly on merit, while the assumption for Black folks is that we can’t get into school or get hired without affirmative action.

Make no mistake affirmative action has helped many people of color as well as women and it is still necessary, but when someone distinguishes his or herself as the best and the brightest, as Obama did at Harvard Law School, its because he/she deserved it.

This “not good enough” treatment for Black men is nothing new, in addition to the well documented episodes experienced by historical figures over the years, there are millions of personal stories that shared by our ancestors that really hit home.

In his autobiography Muhammad Ali noted that although he had just won a gold medal in the 1960 Olympics and heralded as an American hero, he was denied service at a “whites-only” restaurant in Louisville. You see, even though he represented America in the Olympics he “was not good enough” to eat in a restaurant.

Flora Lee Burford, Barbara (Burford) Moore, Bruce Burford, John Burford

John Burford, my deceased maternal grandfather, was part of the “Greatest Generation” having served in World World II, but when he returned home to Joliet, Illinois, he was not allowed to eat in downtown restaurants, join the YMCA or go swimming at Nowell Park Tuesdays through Sundays. He and his family were allowed to swim there on Monday mornings, because the pool was cleaned on Monday afternoons. Grandpa Burford served his country, but he was “not good enough” to be afforded the freedoms he fought to protect.

Samuel Moore

Samuel Moore, my deceased paternal grandfather, did not serve in WWII, rather he was a brick mason in Selma, Alabama. During the war he found himself working alongside German prisoners of war who, in accordance with the 1929 Geneva Convention, were assigned to labor details throughout the south. At lunch time the German prisoners of war were allowed to eat inside local restaurants. Grandpa Moore? Despite being a hard working American man who was raising a family, he wasn’t “good enough” and had to eat outside.

The people who wouldn’t allow Grandpa Burford to join the YMCA or Grandpa Moore to eat inside were pillars of their respective communities and raised kids, many of whom are most likely grandparents now. I often wonder what stories did they pass down, what lessons they taught future generations, what were their legacies?

As I said earlier the media is complicit in this, in my mind they wear the same jacket that Trump and the birthers wear. At this point I don’t want to them to drop the story, I want them to spend as much time looking at the motivations of the birthers and the role that race played in this controversy.

Doing so will send a simple message to President Obama, Muhammad Ali, the late John Burford, the late Samuel Moore and African American men in general. . . “you are good enough.” We know that, we just would like you to acknowledge that.

28. Why do some white people in America, still want to make black people feel "not good enough"?
I'm a gay man who understands the "not good enough" issue, completely.

Yesterday was a sad day in American

history. I am proud to be an American, an American who accepts everyone for

who they are. I don't understand, really, the mind set of those who must put

others down to make themselves feel better about who and what they are.

Why are they so afraid? What do certain (white men especially), fear from

our black brothers and sisters?

Why do they feel the need to dehumanize those, whose only difference, is skin

color?

I have never understood the hatred, especially from those who allege

that they are (Christians) or have some other, chosen religious belief

system, and yet they hate.

Those who choose to live their lives this way, the birchers, the birthers,

the tenthers, the swiftboaters, the whitepower crazies, the secessionists,

the Klan, the general all around haters, these are the people who should be

ashamed, they are the ones who should be ostracized, they should be todays

"Lepers".

They are "Un American", traitors to this country, keeping it divided and

ugly. Spewing hate and lies all across this nation each and every day,

pitting white against black, black against latino, Christian against Muslim,

and Democrat against Republicon. I can think of many more, but you get the

point.

As for the media, they are nothing less than charlatans, keeping hate alive

in this country for their corporate masters, the white man millionaires and

billionaires who control the information forced on all of us.

Every time they give air time to a hateful person, a racist, to spew their

lies and propaganda, they are no better than the racist themselves. They

foment hate, push for the crazy in order to get ratings and do no good for

this nation.

We no longer have news organizations, we have talking heads who read script

prepared by those who want to push this nation in a certain direction, the

stories are designed to get reaction, not to impart the truth. There are

very few Journalists left, who go out, get the "facts" and share them with We

the People to educate and update us on what is going on in our country and

around the world.

Today, we get propaganda, lies, half truths, innuendo and prepared comments,

usually just read into the camera by a person to get their corporate pay

check at the end of the week. The only way to get the facts these days, is

to search for them on the internet and validate all information spoken at us

by those on corporate television.

There have been a lot of ugly, sad, firsts, since our first black President

won the election to lead this nation, and most have been lies and outright

racist, and anyone who isn't in denial, or a racist themselves, knows that

this is the truth.

The first time I ever saw open carrying of firearms at a political gathering,

where the President was going to speak, our President was black,

the first time any issue related to birth documents occurred, our President

was black,

the first time birther bills appeared in several states, our President was

black,

the first time foreskins were ever considered as legitimizing a person to run

for the Presidency, our President was black,

the first time a President was called out for "putting his feet" on the

"White Peoples" desk, the president was black,

there's always been "driving while black", but I don't think the President

has to worry about that one anymore, but I'm sure if President Obama decided

to drive down Pennsylvania Avenue tomorrow, that would also be a first for a

President, a black President of course,

the first time any President has been portrayed as a monkey, the President

was black,

the first time anyone ever shouted from the floor of congress "you lie" in

utter disrespect for a President, the President was black,

the first time a President was called a racist, the President was black,

the first time "second amendment remedies" were talked about, in case their

white, racist, votes didn't win the election, the President was black,

the first time people protested with signs that said, "this time we came

unarmed, the President was black,

even in the primaries, remember those "super delegates" when did you ever

hear of "Super delegates" other than when the candidate running, was black?

I mean come on people, I could do this all day and it doesn't make me feel

good about the white race of haters and ignorant racists in this country, it

really makes me ill.

I am sorry for this country, that with all of the past battles, fights and

wars that we have in engaged in over the years, the hard fought wins for

equality and fairness in this country, that this is how far we've sunk. And

with all of the current battles going on in the world, some here, choose to

battle among us, their own people, to hate, to disenfranchise, to make less

than, to make them feel as though they are not good enough.

When, if ever, will they stop blowing the dog whistles of hate, using the

code words for hate, and committing the violence of hate?

Will we ever, really become, a united people, in the alleged, United States of America?

5. I like what Hurricane Carter said about why he lives in Canada
in the New Yorker recently. To paraphrase, he called Americans hot tempered and said they too easily believe things that aren't true.

How do you reason with birthers/many, many white people on the other side? It's not easy, because they just trot their own set of facts and/or irrational arguments, many of which are hateful.

Ignorance and hate, where would the Republicans be without it?

6. A compelling essay, wndycty
But let's not forget that a majority of Americans thought this man was "good enough" to be elevated to the highest office in the nation, something of which I'm sure your grandfathers would have been extremely proud., and which in some ways helps to vindicate the offenses they suffered in their lives.

It is for the same old political reasons that the Republican party has used since Nixon's day that they have tried so desperately to "other" this man. They are appealing to that racist minority--yes, I truly pray it is a minority (although still too large a one)--that thrives on this stuff. They play on fears and division. They must create an "other" to suspect and fear and hate in order to trick the people into voting against their interests for them.

The media's role: that's another thing. They just want the ratings (read money). They don't care if it's the Kardashian sisters or Donald Trump.

I've been as angry as you these last few weeks, and especially today. But I won't let that anger let me forget that this is not all of America. You were probably there with me that night in Grant Park two and a half years ago, when tens of thousands of people from all walks of life and all parts of the city came together and laughed and cried in awe.

The people diminished by this crass episode of racist baiting are the people who have been doing the baiting. They are the ones who are truly not good enough. In the meantime, we honor your grandfathers' achievements and service, as well as our President's. They weren't just good enough, they were great.

We've watched in disbelief as racism has been sanctioned in the name of politics. It's been nurtured by people like the Koch brothers only so they can get what they want. It's truly a sad commentary on our country. It's disgusting and shameful and we need to fight it at every turn.

Thank you.

15. Wndy, you touch my heart..
I started two or three ops yesterday and then just could not finish them, I just did not have the words or the energy to be honest with you.

The whole birther scenario and the time line.. people who now question well why did he do it now..why did he cave yadda yadda yadda.. just do not get it on any level.

The fact that the President had to put his birth certificate on line in the first place got under my skin.. the one and only official birth certificate recognized by the state of Hawaii. But they demand more, nothing is enough

He did it with grace and kept on going. But the refusal to accept this President.. that he must continually prove himself.. and Corsi was gearing up with another swift boating type book.. and they can turn things around like nothing else.. People basically spit on Kerry and his service and his purple hearts.. It was a dismal site and it was gearing up again.

But the birther issue was to the very core of the Presidents existence. And it was just not the President, it is his children, his family..Michelle, her family.. all my friends here in DU and in real life..my son who is a different race than I am.. all were being attacked at the core .. made less than by this constant demand for papers to prove you are a "real" citizen.. a "real" student deserving of the honors he earned etc.

And I am sick and tired of the excuses .. it is what it is.. and the President did the right thing. He should not have had to..but he was right to do it now.

Thank you

in 1965, as a kindergartner. This was 14 years after Brown vs. the Board of Education.

The Birther Republicans are motivated by racism, and nothing less.

I heard the end of a story on NPR last week about a decorated black unit returning from WW2. When they arrived on the ship, and came down the gangplank, a white guard at the bottom was yelling as they disembarked "Whites to the right! N****** to the left", and the story teller realized that nothing had changed, despite their sacrifice.
