Rove Says Obama Running Negative Campaign

Karl Rove argues that President Obama is running a negative reelection campaign:

"Since Mr. Obama can't make an affirmative case for his re-election, he has decided to try convincing voters that Republicans are monstrous. As a result, America is likely to see the most negative re-election campaign ever mounted by a sitting president."

Jonathan Chait: "Yes: Karl Rove! Architect of what has almost universally, and with virtually no dissent, been described as the most negative reelection campaign ever mounted by a sitting president. Now, I don't think negativity was the problem with Bush's reelection campaign, but Rove's vapors here are pretty comic. If ever there was a president who lacked popular support and had to disqualify his opponent through personal attacks in order to win, it was George W. Bush in 2004."

4. Negative campaign? Where? Saying the Ryan plan hurts the poor and middle class - because it does?
Rove's despicable campaigns - in both 2000 and 2004 - were negative campaigns - as Jonathan Chait said.

11. Apparently Rove doesn't know about Truman's 1948 campaign in which he repeatedly attacked the
"do nothing Republican congress."

Of course for Rove to complain about negative campaigning is a severe case of pot kettle blacking.

20. Rove always attacks where his opponent is strongest
Obama is notably not negative and tends to be very upbeat, painting more of a picture of
what he wants to create rather than harping on the negative. Rove is trying to change that narrative.
This is his usual slimy tactic of attacking into strength. Beware of Rove, always. Never take him at face
value. He is busy trying to change the narrative about Obama. There is always another layer to what he is doing.

21. OMG I thought this was a ONION piece
Rove is getting ready to get his ass kicked at his own game and so he is starting the whine now.

Fuck Rove and his viscious game that he has played for the last 15 years.

Rove expects the Democratic party to step back and go "oh we shouldn't be mean, we shouldn't use these tactics that level the playing field.

I think President Obamas thrashing of Trump and Bachman was a fantastic "I am here to compete" salvo....

22. Oh fer crissakes!
Cry me a river, pigboy.

I recall years ago on Sam Seder's Air America radio show, the subject of Rove's alleged "genius" came up. Co-host Janeane Garafolo said that it takes no genius to appeal to the basest instincts of people. Such a true statement.

24. There is nothing wrong with negative campagins, they are often necessary to win.
But, there is a difference between a negative campaign and a nasty or crooked campaign.

When people hear the nastiest of them all, rove, say negative, they hear dirty.
