Whatever chance he might have had, Trump himself destroyed it last night
Edited on Sun May-01-11 06:41 PM by Keith Bee
Taking himself way too seriously, not even cracking a smile as Obama and Meyers gave him some richly-deserved ribbing. Even the neoCon Artists won't want a thin-skinned asswipe like that in control of the nukes. Ironically, it reminds me of what Nixon said: When you hate your opponents, you destroy yourself.

1. hmm, interesting comment.
Why do people hate opponents, should they help a person find their faults and improve, and even share ideas?

Who is hating?

Or are you saying you detect hate in Trump? I think it is the personality trait of assertiveness. The idea that you plow forward.

9. Nope, he's a hater
And the reason I didn't list Nixon's full quote is because I don't think Obama hates his opponents.

13. Assertive?????
He is cruel. Either a hater or has no sense of empathy or compassion.

Today he said of Meyers...his delivery was bad because he's a stutterer. Unbelievable!

Does he think at all before he speaks. His hatred of Meyers is so great that he doesn't bother to consider all the stutterers out there living painful lives. He is a vile human being.

19. That was coded.
Edited on Sun May-01-11 07:44 PM by RandomThoughts
Kings speech reference, although there are other meanings.

He was making a statement of appeasement.

The media wont let some say some things, so they talk in code.

And some talk in code to obfuscate those talking in code.

and some just make noise.

I am not saying I agree with him, although I think he is being ran down by a system that has many problems.

15. Here's the reason he's so "assertive" and why he "plows forward"
Excellent article from the Detroit Free Press posted elsewhere on DU this evening:

17. Trump isn't necessarily a hater. He's ASSertive, alright, but mostly...
Edited on Sun May-01-11 07:29 PM by ProfessionalLeftist
... He's an ignorant homophobe, racist, and sexist jerk. That, and seemingly quite narcissistic, too (assertive, as you call it). Money might buy status & comfort, but it can't fix ignorant and it doesn't cure mental maladies.

10. Yes
And he basically fessed up to it that day. He was speaking of his own self-destruction.

3. I hope I don't regret this because I'm going to kind of praise George W. Bush
But even he was self-deprecating and had a sense of humor. He knew that he was a poor public speaker, and he knew that he was not all that bright. He could disarm his critics by joking about these things.

7. GWB took himself more seriously than he did the job of potus. n/t
Could you give me an example of this self-deprecation?

(the looking for WMD slideshow at the correspondents dinner isn't a good example, imho.)

8. CSPAN showed some of his self-deprecative humor last night...
Edited on Sun May-01-11 06:36 PM by TTUBatfan2008
It involved an impersonator speaking next to him at the Correspondents Dinner in 2006. Basically the impersonator served as the little devil on his shoulder, delivering to the audience GWB's "actual" thoughts. And then GWB would give the sterilized version. It was pretty funny. Here's some video of it:

20. Wow, that was funny! But it made my dog whine.
She remembers how I used to disturb her sleep by tearing the bedclothes apart searching for the remote whenever that voice came on the teevee.

Probably would have without this bizarre crusade, but he has clinched it now.

14. He's not going to run. Why should he try to get a truly difficult job that's paid a fraction
of what he now gets, and have to try to please people and do good works?

While both he nor Palin would love to have the power and/or trappings of the office of Pres., neither have any taste for the job itself or for what it would take to get the job in the first place, and they both have easier and more lucrative options. Palin is smart enough (yes, I hate to admit that, but I have to give her credit for it) to cash in on her notoriety and at least she knows from her limited experience as gov. something of what to expect as Pres. I think Trump's inexperience and ego may blind him from time to time and make him toy with running, but he's getting some pretty harsh lessons about the campaign trail already, so in the end he'll know he can't stand the heat.

16. Why Trump might run? Legacy!
He has enough of everything else. If I had as much money,
I would be after Legacy. But that is just me. Trump is
probably seeking just some cheap & free publicity.

21. yes - it is far too difficult and stressful a life for the likes of Trump
Edited on Sun May-01-11 08:59 PM by spooky3
I hope he is smart enough to realize that, but you never know.

For someone with very different character, ability, and drives--particularly if he/she doesn't have the attractive alternatives that Trump already has, having been born into wealth and privilege or acquired it on his/her own--it's a very different decision.

He can leave a legacy without being Pres., with the wealth and power he already (allegedly) has. But it requires being willing to do good works.
