MSNBC: Trust but verify....
Edited on Mon May-02-11 10:56 AM by dennis4868
Did anyone see this reporter on MSNBC just a few minutes ago talking about the need for the WH to release pictures of a dead Bin Laden based on Reagan saying "Trust but Verify." Ummmm when Reagan said Trust but Verify he was talking about the Soviet Union, a country that we were at war with and a country that wanted to destroy us for many years. Reagan was not talking about our own government. ARE THESE PEOPLE THAT STUPID?

1. I think 'Trust but Verify' is a good rule of thumb with the government.
And they have to release SOMETHING.

4. I agree...
the government should release photos but my point was the TRUST BUT VERIFY statement made by Reagan....when Reagan said trust but verify he was talking about the freakan Soviet Union....our main enemy....not our own government.

5. Yes, I understood that. And it's possible the MSNBC person did, too.
Although if they're younger than 40, they might not remember the context.

Regardless of the original usage, it's commonly used today in many contexts. And I use it with our own government frequently.

2. They missed out on verifying that whole WMD/Iraq/911 thing, they just trusted.
Funny.

3. I see nothing wrong with releasing the photo of Bin Laden

Not doing so will only feed the conspiracy theorists.

Even doing so will not completely silence the conspiracy theorists. Bush fucked up the war on terror so badly that the conspiracy theories will never die, unfortunately.
