The silence around the table was profound. Dr. B. laid out the scenario very clinically, step by step, as the rescue attempt met with failure after failure. He also recounted how the rescue would actually play out. It was a very complicated plan and you could understand how such a difficult scheme could unravel. By contrast, the OBL take-out was streamlined (though enormously gutsy). It shows you how much has been learned in the intervening years.

If you missed it, you should go on the show's website at www.msnbc.com and watch. I was spellbound. It was chilling. After he finished, Mika said "He's never told us this."

1. I was riveted. Wow.
I wonder if he had clearance to tell that story.

Either way, I am glad he did.

2. I don't know if he had to have clearance.
I just thought he felt it was time to tell the tale as he saw it play out. These "insider" stories of very dramatic historical moments make for great television.

I'm glad he told it, too. It was perfectly timed and he put it in such a clear perspective that you couldn't help admire the man. I wonder if Mika really knew he was going to tell it...

9. It also gives you a different insight into the Carter
presidency.

Now that I think about it, the GOP has never changed, has it?

(With the help of a ornery Democratic leadership) The GOP did its best to kill the Carter presidency. They painted him to be a oaf, clueless, lost at sea and inept. The reality now seems to be quite different.
When Clinton was elected, they pulled out all stops again. I do not recall one day that Clinton was not under attack for something, anything. Even Foster's suicide was his fault. I do fault him in his choice of women, though, he could have gotten someone far cuter.
Now that Obama is CIC, if he didn't get Osama, it would be his fault. If he did get Osama, it would be his fault for taking credit, pandering, politicizing 9/11, and worse.

Democrats do not act like this with GOP presidents. We tend to be more policy oriented. The GOP simply attacks, and if they can't find something to sink their teeth into, they make shit up.

10. Bush41 was never Reagan's running mate ...
the Ayatollah of Iran was Reagan's best friend ... indirectly ...

16. That was fascinating.
I always thought the collision with the plane happened as they were going in. I had no idea that the mission had been scrubbed and the collision occurred as they were leaving.

4. Yes -
and I could not help but think about the fact that just two days ago here on DU a poster firmly asserted that the mission was sabotaged by big oil interests.

11. I'd like to read that
but I'm not sure how I'd search for that on DU, just tried to find it and couldn't.

6. Not sure, but I think it is because it's too soon. They don't put the show's segments
up until after it's over.

Wait for about an hour or so. It'll be there eventually. It was too riveting not to be!

7. It's up now, just watched. For those not familiar with the details, worthwhile, but no new facts
revealed. I remember these events well and studied them closely at the time.

12. I didn't know the story at all. That's why I was so glad he told it.
Especially relevant to the present. You can see how carefully the OBL raid was planned, in view of what happened to Carter...

17. yup.
My memories were clouded by the GOP attack dogs, twisting the story to Carter's detriment and their benefit.

I guess it took me a few years to figure out that is exactly how they operate. All the time.

13. thanks CT Yankee.....Been wondering what you thought about
Mika's new book....interesting how she's aware that she was being gobbled up
by the male world on MOJO. she said she was paid 14 times less than Joe.

She does seem to have changed a bit but I wish she would get out of that
scolding, unhappy parent mentality.

14. She has gotten better
but it is still very uncomfortable to watch her, at least when she shares the camera with Joe. When he's not there, she seems like a different person.

His massive ego sucks all the life out of the show. I don't know why he has anyone else on, except to bully them of course.

21. in my career, I have seen plenty of women who act like her. The
men don't respect them and command the conversation. She is basically just white noise. But
I don't think this would be the case (think Erin Burnett who does the biz segments)...if Mika
stopped the chatter and actually did some research and spouted out some facts or insight
once in a while. I seldom see her do any more than react to what others say. She also
doesn't make declarative statements (which you will notice, the men do) but instead she ends
statements with "don't you think?" or "maybe I don't know all the facts"

22. That's true
She does "react". Reminds me of female side-kicks on the radio who laugh at jokes and react to the male star. Very annoying.

I also noticed that her body language shows a great deal of discomfort and insecurity. As a woman I can actually feel that discomfort when I watch her.

20. And all the while, Reagan was boasting he had a "secret plan"
for releasing the hostages. You'd think he'd have shared it. He never did say what it was.
