****AP Poll: Obama approval rating at 60%!!!***
Edited on Wed May-11-11 02:35 AM by BluegrassDem
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's approval rating is at its highest point in two years.

That's according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. It shows that 60 percent now approve of the job Obama is doing. And more than half now say he deserves to be re-elected.

The poll was taken a week after U.S. forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. And it comes on the heels of a strong jobs report that showed American businesses are on a hiring spree.

I'm glad that Obama's rating is up. I have thought he is the right leader in our times. And I have been disappointed with some of his choices, as President. I have always known that He is brilliant, and I have confidence that he will continue to do a great job.

32. "Cheer up" will bring MEDICARE FOR ALL ... ?
Stop two new trade agreements with Korea and Colombia -- ?

End the Great Recession which was more likely a depression -- ?

Overturn Obama's effort to keep tax cuts for the rich going -- ?

Stimulate the economy and create jobs -- ?

Or maybe end concerns about Obama's attacks on Social Security -- ?

Obama has a nice smile -- I'll give you that --

He didn't just get a bump with the killing of OBL, as expected. Something has shifted. I think people have realized that they can trust him.

Unlike my fellow progressives, I never expected Obama to turn water into wine. Things were bad and would probably get worse and I knew it would be a long and arduous journey to dig our way out of the mess.

When you are in a sailboat and hit threatening weather...you don't expect the Captain to stop the winds and waves (unless you're a progressive!!) you want a Captain who will get you home safely.

I think people are starting to realize that times are crazy, we don't even know what to expect anymore. But we can trust Obama and want him at the helm.

13. He's like Captain Sully... He knows its a bad situation... so he lands
the plane on the hudson... trying to glide onto the water... The plane crashed, but not hard and in millions of pieces with a large loss of life.. Nope glided the plane onto the water... but the passengers still had to get out onto the wings in cold, freezing water of the Hudson and await rescue... But they did survive. He's setting things up... I think a real progressive may have the chance after this... or perhaps a congress that's more progressive so that he can sign some really good legislation...

You summed it up well. Obama has passed the "commander-in-chief" test, and the only thing stopping him from re-election is the economy. And if the economy starts to improve, he will be re-elected in a landslide.

NOT keep wars going four years after he has taken office -- ?

NOT extend tax cuts for the rich -- ?

NOT put new trade agreements in place with Korea and Colombia -- ?

54. Can we really trust him?
I certainly don't have that impression. I thought he was rock solid on increasing the tax percentage paid by the rich - he didn't keep his work. I thought he was solid on single payer or even public option - no, just another abandonned campaign promise. I could go on and on and on - but none of these things give me any trust of confidence in our president. The best thing that can truthfully be said about him is that he isn't a batshit crazy Repug, though, to my great sadness, he often resembles a moderate Repug.

the poll sampling shifted to 49 percent Democrat, 28 percent Republican, which is wildly different from the actual electorate.

20. I would have loved to have seen his approval
ratings higher than 60%, considering Bush had an approval of 80%+ when 9/11 happened
this is besides the fact that the Bush administration had information prior to the terrorist strike
in America.

Obama killed Bin Laden and his approval ratings is only 60%, it should be
higher than 60%.

36. Well, all the racist wingnuts supported Bush
and there's no way in hell they'll ever line up behind Obama, even if he walks on water (What's the matter? Can't he swim?), so you figure they're maybe 30% of the population, and when you subtract them out, maybe Obama has 90% of the rational portion of the populace who at least see him as a better alternative than the Republican Flavor-of-the-Week nutcake.

Only one person got killed. Presidential approval ratings go up when people die from bullets and bombs. If death is from a natural disaster, approval goes down. Doesn't 'Murica base approval on the bodycount of foreigners? :sarcasm:

There's around 40 percent who will never approve of a Dem president much less a black one and are maintained in that by constant exposure to Rush and Fox.

If Obama wrestled the Devil on prime time national TV and beat him he probably wouldn't get much past 65%.

Despite a sluggish recovery from the Great Recession, 52 percent of Americans now approve of Obama's stewardship of the economy, giving him his best rating on that issue since the early days of his presidency; 52 percent also now like how he's handling the nation's stubbornly high 9 percent unemployment.

67. Return to "real" money such as?
Return to the gold standard? Outside of Ron Paul and his merry men, no one is advocating that.
If you have 1000 Krugerrands stashed in your basement for a rainy day, good for you, but all
that will do at today's high gold price will invite an armed break-in.

We do need fiscal responsibility, I agree, but that means revenue enhancement as well as spending
control. That means tax hikes on big earners and closing of loopholes for big oil and offshore
haven companies like the (now) Dubai-based Halliburton. As long as the radical right says they
can balance the budget by spending cuts alone, I can safely say that Linus will see the Great Pumpkin first.

72. Here's one from the TOS:
Who is Welcome on Democratic Underground, and Who is Not

Democratic Underground is an online community for Democrats and other progressives. Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office.

We ban conservative disruptors who are opposed to the broad goals of this website. If you think overall that George W. Bush is doing a swell job, or if you wish to see Republicans win, or if you are generally supportive of conservative ideals, please do not register to post, as you will likely be banned.

People who repeatedly and willfully break the rules, or who generally engage in rude, anti-social behavior, will be banned. It doesn't matter if you are a fellow progressive, a long-term member of this community, or a donor.

If you have been banned from Democratic Underground, you are not permitted to log on again using a different username. Previously banned members will be immediately banned, regardless of behavior.

Oh, and IBTT(A).

74. The most important thing
The most important thing about this is that we will have a President with more Political Capital who is stronger and better able to fight for the American people against the Republicans and their destructive plans for our economy and the middle class as a whole.

80. Well, if this hiring trend continues and unemployment falls under 7% by next November...
Obama will win by a bigger landslide than even Clinton did in 1996, no matter who the Repukes throw at him.

81. I'm glad to hear this, and hoping he will use that capital on our behalf.
Just today, bills advanced that would cut Medicaid to seniors and long-term unemployment benefits. The President has the politcal capital to step in here and speak on behalf of the American people, instead of the oligarchs. Hope he uses it.

84. That is an amazing number considering the endless bashing he gets from RW media and RW talkshows..
plus the deluge of misinformation, exaggerations and outright lies from those who oppose him both on the right and the left.

89. Don't be too happy just yet, look at who they polled
From the source.

Democrat or Democrat-leaning: 46
Republican or Republican-leaning: 29

That includes the independent leaners. Among just Democrats and Republians:

Democrat: 35
Republican: 18

Even if every Republican hated him, a good number of Democrats were also voting disapproval.

93. I see your numbers, but don't see how you arrived at your conclusion.
Since you apparently didn't take any of the 24% of "no leaning" or "don't know" respondents into consideration.
