Carville: Obama is looking like a 2008 Republican
Obama is looking like a 2008 Republican

"The fact that Obama promoted the individual mandate health-care plan previously endorsed by Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty had the GOP up in arms.

But boy, what really got the boys on Fox News, talk radio and the Tea Party gassed up was when Obama praised Pawlenty, McCain and Romney's cap-and-trade carbon-control plan. And I almost forgot his stimulus program was attacked by John Huntsman for not being large enough...

Of course, he sure got an earful about taking Newt's advice and intervening in Libya, not to mention the stir he caused by just following George W. Bush's lead in sending troops to Afghanistan...

It's not that Obama is a socialist born somewhere other than Hawaii, or that he possesses a Kenyan anti-colonial mentality -- but that some Republican needs to stand up and say, with some legitimacy, that Obama is taking all of the GOP's ideas."

----------------

I've been amazed at how much animosity the republicans have against Obama. It can't be his policies.

2. Their animosity is almost pure racism.
They just cannot stand the idea that there's a successful, smart black man in the White House.

They cannot stand it.

4. "Obama is taking all of the GOP's ideas"
Carville is correct about that. This strategy is actually what Bill Clinton perfected. This is what has propelled the GOP further and further right. They feel they must keep moving right because it seems no matter how far right they go, Clinton and now Obama claim that ground making them go further right. Rinse and repeat.

6. It's really the other way round
Aided by a willing media, a Democratic party of which 30% plus is conservative (and shuns even moderate proposals from its own President), and -n amnesiac electorate, the right, whenever in power , successfully shifts the goal posts. Then, what was once "centrist" comes to represent radical marxism. If the Democratic party wasn't so fractious and the electorate constantly looking for an excuse to hand power back to the GOP, Democratic Presidents wouldn't have to spend so much time compromising.

A special mention to the big business community , too - Obama is, in their words, completely unfriendly and perhaps downright harmful to them, more so than any other President in living memory, despite their record profits. You can thank eight years of Bush for that.

96. The only problem with that
is that it also moves the dems further and further to the right. The dems need to stand their ground and win people over. The repugs are good at talking working people into voting against their interests. The dems need to find their message.

8. The title of that article
completely misses the point. Then again, the article itself is a little ambiguous.

<...>

The fact that Obama promoted the individual mandate health-care plan previously endorsed by Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty had the GOP up in arms.

But boy, what really got the boys on Fox News, talk radio and the Tea Party gassed up was when Obama praised Pawlenty, McCain and Romney's cap-and-trade carbon-control plan. And I almost forgot his stimulus program was attacked by John Huntsman for not being large enough.

<...>

In 1992, Bill Clinton famously proclaimed himself to be an Eisenhower Republican. By that measure, I'd say President Obama is a pre-2008 John McCain Republican.

<...>

Republicans are upset because President Obama is successfully linking them to his policies when they're trying hard to align with the teabaggers.

Republicans flip flop constantly so linking them to a policy isn't hard to do. Cap and trade is not a Republican concept. It goes back to the 80s when then Lt. Gov. Kerry of MA pushed an acid rain program.

John Huntsman pushing for a larger stimulus would align him with Krugman, who I doubt anyone mistakes for a Republican.

Romney is a perfect example of the whiplash Republicans are suffering in trying to stake out a position on the issues. He can't shake RomneyCare, which became law over his veto.

In effect, the President is countering them with praise.

89. Don't believe your lying eyes, use this bullshit meter. I have a meter I call it the RahmQ
Or Rahm Quotient.

Thing that give Obama an extremely high RahmQ-

Taking single payer off the table before negotiations started. If we had started at single payer we might have had a chance to keep the public option in the end.

Cutting a deal with big pharma before the health care negotiations started.(remember that we won't let them have every seat at the table bullshit from the campaign... it was bullshit)

Refusing to support our constitution and the rule of law by investigating the Bush regimes most heinous crimes for example torture.

Wasting so much of the stimulus on tax cuts' when it is the least effect way to stimulate the economy. A real stimulus might have had a real chance to improve the economy significantly, if all the wasted tax cuts had gone into public works we wouldn't be at 9% unemployment.

Not making the extension of the Bush tax cuts a campaign issue in 2010 and then bending over on it.

Hiring Rahm, Geithner, Simpson and so forth in the first place.

Firing Howard Dean as the head of the DNC.

Bowing his head to Fox news by firing Sherrod and Van Jones based on lies and misinformation.

Not making the repeal of the 2006 military commissions act a priority.

Not pushing for any real financial reform. As it stand right now the Banks are right back to business as usual and the bubble will burst again, and we didn't stop it when we had the chance.

And so on...

97. If by bullshit you mean it is full of important issues that any progessive should care about.
Edited on Fri May-27-11 10:06 AM by Exultant Democracy
If on the other hand you mean it is bullshit like the Obama promise meter that weights everything said on the campaign equally without giving extra weight to the important promises that actually got progressives to support him (especially over Clinton)then I disagree.

• Historic healthcare reform bill signed – $940 billion over 10 years (2010) * Note: 32 million additional Americans will receive healthcare coverage and costs will be lowered for most Americans, but many of the goals are phased in over four years

Components of the bill

- Prevents insurance companies from denying coverage to individuals/family members with pre-existing health conditions; a temporary plan is being developed to cover high-risk individuals with pre-existing conditions until the full reforms go into effect in 2014

- Prevents insurance companies from placing lifetime limits on benefits

- Bans “rescission” so insurance companies can’t cancel coverage if individuals keep their policies current or if they become ill

- An individual’s out-of-pocket healthcare expenses are capped

- Closes the “donut hole” (Part D) for Medicare prescription drug coverage (under Bush, Medicare helped pay for drugs up to $2,600 and above $4,550, but individuals had to pay 100% of the costs in between these amounts); now Medicare helps cover costs irrespective of the amount – seniors will now pay only 25% of drug costs up to $4,550 and only 5% of drug costs above that amount

- In 2010, an emergency provision will offer seniors a $250 rebate on the costs incurred within the “donut hole”

- Individuals living at or below the poverty line were eligible for healthcare under Medicaid, but by 2014 individuals/families living slightly above (making up to $14,404/$29,327) the poverty line will also be eligible for benefits

- Individuals/families making less than $43,320/$88,200 per year will qualify for government subsidies to help purchase health insurance

- All individuals must have health insurance or face a government fine; all large (over 50 employees) employers must offer health insurance to employees or pay a fine

- Small businesses can get a tax credit if they offer health care

- There are hardship exemptions if individuals can’t afford health insurance

- Families can keep their children in college on their plans through age 26

- Promotes health insurance “exchanges” so consumers can buy “wholesale”

- Creates consumer assistance offices to help consumers file complaints or appeal decisions from insurance companies; beginning in 2011, insurance companies can no longer make excessive rate hikes without justification and approval, and those doing so may be barred from participating in new health insurance exchanges

Funding sources:

- Large employers (over 50 workers) that don’t offer health benefits will be charged a $2,000/worker fee; if the employer offers coverage but employees instead purchase federally subsidized insurance the fee is $3,000/worker receiving federal subsidies or $750/worker (whichever is lower)

- Annual fees on pharmaceutical companies ($27 billion), health insurance companies ($60 billion), and medical device-makers ($20 billion)

- Annual penalties on individuals who do not have health insurance (up to a maximum of $695/person)

- Increase in the Medicare payroll tax from 1.45% to 2.35% for individuals making $200,000+ and families making $250,000+

- 3.8% tax on unearned income for millionaires

- Insurance companies will be subject to a tax on each high-end insurance plan (so-called “Cadillac” plans) they offer

- Illegal immigrants are not eligible for insurance or subsidies

- By Executive Order, such federal funding can’t be used for abortion

- The federal government will assist states by covering all of the increased expenses of expanding Medicaid coverage (90% of costs after 2020)

So my question to you is,
what have you personally accomplished that makes you more of a Democrat than those you judge?

20. Romney could have done any or all of those things
maybe more, since the GOP Congress would support him more than they do Obama.

campaign must be really good to have convinced you of that.

RomneyCare maybe an albatross around Romney's neck in trying to win the GOP primary, but there is no such thing. The Mass health care became law despite Romney's veto:

In fall 2005 the House and Senate each passed health care reform bills.

The legislature made a number of changes to Governor Romney's original proposal, including expanding MassHealth (Medicaid and SCHIP) coverage to low-income children and restoring funding for public health programs. The most controversial change was the addition of a provision which requires firms with 11 or more workers that do not provide "fair and reasonable" health coverage to their workers to pay an annual penalty. This contribution, initially $295 annually per worker, is intended to equalize the free care pool charges imposed on employers who do and do not cover their workers. The legislature also rejected Governor Romney's proposal to permit even higher-deductible, lower benefit health plans.

On April 12, 2006 Governor Mitt Romney signed the health legislation.<19> He vetoed 8 sections of the health care legislation, including the controversial employer assessment.<20> Romney also vetoed provisions providing dental benefits to poor residents on the Medicaid program, and providing health coverage to senior and disabled legal immigrants not eligible for federal Medicaid.<21><22> The legislature promptly overrode six of the eight gubernatorial section vetoes, on May 4, 2006, and by mid-June 2006 had overridden the remaining two.

Also, you have evidence that a GOP Congress wants to close Guantanamo, support equal pay and repeal DOMA?

Please share.

he accurately has been stressing the similarities between Obamacare and Romenycare. You seem to be in denial of something Obama and I and others all see clearly.

But that "more" would not be progressive at all.

like extending the Bush tax cuts. It's possible the same dems that went along with Obama's deal would have blocked the same deal under a GOP president.

we should have all voted for McCain/Palin because Congress would have blocked extending the tax cuts.

Who's your pick among the GOP for President in 2012?

There are some good things on there, but it is heavily padded with distractions. It makes the list as a whole unreadable and ineffective.

since Fluff is relative to those affected vs. those who don't give a shit,
based on their very own personal criteria.

How's that?
Think folks can make that effort?...
or is being critical about everything for the sake
of being a contrarian actually makes life worth living?

Edited on Wed May-25-11 12:03 PM by ProSense
the Democratic credentials of the man who won the Democratic primary and the Presidential election as a Democrat?

The man who delivered health care reform (let Sen. Sanders help explain) and Wall Street reform? The man who selected Elizabeth Warren to head the CFPB and appointed Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to the SCOTUS?

The first President ever to cancel a weapons system?

...He canceled a weapons program that was bloated, unnecessary and totally irrelevant to either of our current wars, the F-22. Why even mention the cancellation of a single weapons system? Because that never happens. Weapons systems never get canceled. The F-22 did, which is itself a miracle.

The bullshit they pitch to justify the exact same actions.

The path to Hell is paved with good intentions, and those are taken as articles of faith just a narrative folks tell themselves at night to allow them to swallow another shovel full of shit for supper.

I am not shooting his message: of course the individual mandate was accepted by most Republicans only 7 or 8 years ago. Carville is hardly criticizing Obama for that: he's trying to hook the Republicans for being flip floppers. It won't work, but whatever.

That said, I haven't cared for Carville since 1993. I'm allowed to express that, aren't I? Or are only certain select individuals allowed to be critiqued. Don't answer that.

54. That many of the policy positions Obama supported or is currently supporting...
...were in fact supported by Republicans in the past.

- Israel & the 1967 borders
- Individual mandate health plan
- Cap-and-trade

Just another example of the Republicans' rightward shift. They're constantly moving to the right to oppose Obama even though many of the policies they are opposed to were policies that they previously supported, vigorously in some cases.

In short, Republicans are disingenuous and much of their opposition to the policies mentioned above is not based on substance.

56. Yup,
"That many of the policy positions Obama supported or is currently supporting ...were in fact supported by Republicans in the past."

Why do you think that is? Could it be because Republicans flip flop constantly so linking them to a policy isn't hard to do? Cap and trade is not a Republican concept. It goes back to the 80s when then Lt. Gov. Kerry of MA pushed an acid rain program.

Republicans are upset because President Obama is successfully linking them to his policies when they're trying hard to align with the teabaggers.

Carville claims that John Huntsman pushed for a larger stimulus. That would align him with Krugman, who I doubt anyone mistakes for a Republican.

Romney is a perfect example of the whiplash Republicans are suffering in trying to stake out a position on the issues. He can't shake RomneyCare, which became law over his veto.

In effect, the President is countering Republicans with praise.

Let's be honest here, no Democrat could out-conservative the master Bill Clinton.

Clinton makes Obama look like Karl Marx in comparison and that isn't necessarily a knock - as that was the politics of the 90s. But Carville is being disingenuous when he says Obama is looking like a 2008 Republican.

All you have to do is look at the http://www.gop.com/2008Platform">2008 Republican platform to see how absurd this notion is.

Just some snippets:

Immigration

The rule of law means guaranteeing to law enforcement the tools and coordination to deport criminal aliens without delay – and correcting court decisions that have made deportation so difficult. It means enforcing the law against those who overstay their visas, rather than letting millions flout the generosity that gave them temporary entry. It means imposing maximum penalties on those who smuggle illegal aliens into the U.S., both for their lawbreaking and for their cruel exploitation. It means requiring cooperation among federal, state and local law enforcement and real consequences, including the denial of federal funds, for self-described sanctuary cities, which stand in open defiance of the federal and state statutes that expressly prohibit such sanctuary policies, and which endanger the lives of U.S. citizens. It does not mean driver's licenses for illegal aliens, nor does it mean that states should be allowed to flout the federal law barring them from giving in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens, nor does it mean that illegal aliens should receive social security benefits, or other public benefits, except as provided by federal law.

We oppose amnesty. The rule of law suffers if government policies encourage or reward illegal activity. ]The American people's rejection of en masse legalizations is especially appropriate given the federal government's past failures to enforce the law.

English Only

One sign of our unity is our English language. For newcomers, it has always been the fastest route to prosperity in America. English empowers. We support English as the official language in our nation, while welcoming the ethnic diversity in the United States and the territories, including language. Immigrants should be encouraged to learn English. English is the accepted language of business, commerce, and legal proceedings, and it is essential as a unifying cultural force. It is also important, as part of cultural integration, that our schools provide better education in U.S. history and civics for all children, thereby fostering a commitment to our national motto, E Pluribus Unum. (my own thought: anyone else find that last bit ironic - English as an official language and the quote the national motto - which is in Latin?)

Sovereign American Leadership

Because the UN has no mandate to promote radical social engineering, any effort to address global social problems must respect the fundamental institutions of marriage and family. We assert the rights of families in all international programs and will not fund organizations involved in abortion. We strongly support the long-held policy of the Republican Party known as the “Mexico City policy,” which prohibits federal monies from being given to non-governmental organizations that provide abortions or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other countries. We reject any treaty or agreement that would violate those values. That includes the UN convention on women's rights, signed in the last months of the Carter Administration, and the UN convention on the rights of the child. For several reasons, particularly our concern for US sovereignty and America's long-term energy needs, we have deep reservations about the regulatory, legal, and tax regimes inherent in the Law of the Sea Treaty.

Taxes

Because the problem is too much spending, not too few taxes, we support a supermajority requirement in both the House and Senate to guard against tax hikes.

We support the Government Shutdown Protection Act to ensure the continuance of essential federal functions when advocates of pork threaten to shut down the government unless their wasteful spending is accepted. (again, ironic, with what just happened a couple months ago...)

States' Rights

We look to the model of Republican welfare reform, which, since its enactment in 1996, has accomplished a major transfer of resources and responsibility from the federal government back to the states – with an accompanying improvement in the program itself. Applying that approach to other programs will steer Congress back into line with the Constitution, reversing both its intrusion into state matters and its neglect of its central duties.

Additionally, as important as returning power to the states is returning power to the people. As the Declaration of Independence states, our rights are endowed to us by our Creator and are inalienable: rights to life, liberty, and property. Government does not confer these rights but is instituted by men to protect the rights that man already possesses. The Republican Party strongly affirms these rights and demands that government respect them.

Taxes

Sound tax policy alone may not ensure economic success, but terrible tax policy does guarantee economic failure. Along with making the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent so American families will not face a large tax hike, Republicans will advance tax policies to support American families, promote savings and innovation, and put us on a path to fundamental tax reform.

  • For the sake of family farms and small businesses, we will continue our fight against the federal death tax.
  • The Alternative Minimum Tax, a stealth levy on the middle-class that unduly targets large families, must be repealed.

As a matter of principle, we oppose retroactive taxation, and we condemn attempts by judges, at any level of government, to seize the power of the purse by ordering higher taxes.

Protecting Union Workers

We affirm both the right of individuals to voluntarily participate in labor organizations and bargain collectively and the right of states to enact Right-to-Work laws. But the nation’s labor laws, to a large extent formed out of conflicts several generations ago, should be modernized to make it easier for employers and employees to plan, execute, and profit together.

The recent attempt by congressional Democrats to deny workers a secret ballot in union referenda is an assault, not only against a fundamental principle of labor law, but even more against the dignity and honor of the American work force. We oppose “card check” legislation, which deprives workers of their privacy and their right to vote, because it exposes workers to intimidation by union organizers.

Energy

If we are to have the resources we need to achieve energy independence, we simply must draw more American oil from American soil. We support accelerated exploration, drilling and development in America, from new oilfields off the nation’s coasts to onshore fields such as those in Montana, North Dakota, and Alaska. The Green River Basin in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming offers recoverable shale oil that is ready for development, and most of it is on federal lands.

To deliver that energy to American consumers, we will expand our refining capacity. Because of environmental extremism and regulatory blockades in Washington, not a single new refinery has been built in this country in 30 years. We will encourage refinery construction and modernization and, with sensitivity to environmental concerns, an expedited permitting process.

Climate Change

To reduce emissions in the short run, we will rely upon the power of new technologies, as discussed above, especially zero-emission energy sources such as nuclear and other alternate power sources. But innovation must not be hamstrung by Washington bickering, regulatory briar patches, or obstructionist lawsuits. Empowering Washington will only lead to unintended consequences and unimagined economic and environmental pain; instead, we must unleash the power of scientific know-how and competitive markets.

Republicans caution against the doomsday climate change scenarios peddled by the aficionados of centralized command-and-control government. We can – and should– address the risk of climate change based on sound science without succumbing to the no-growth radicalism that treats climate questions as dogma rather than as situations to be managed responsibly.

Right to Bear Arms

We uphold the right of individual Americans to own firearms, a right which antedated the Constitution and was solemnly confirmed by the Second Amendment. We applaud the Supreme Court’s decision in Heller affirming that right, and we assert the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms. We call on the next president to appoint judges who will similarly respect the Constitution. Gun ownership is responsible citizenship, enabling Americans to defend themselves, their property, and communities.

'Equality

Precisely because we oppose discrimination, we reject preferences, quotas, and set-asides, whether in education or in corporate boardrooms. The government should not make contracts on this basis, and neither should corporations. We support efforts to help low-income individuals get a fair shot based on their potential and merit, and we affirm the common-sense approach of the Chief Justice of the United States: that the way to stop discriminating on the basis of race is to stop discriminating.

The American Flag

The symbol of our unity, to which we all pledge allegiance, is the flag. By whatever legislative method is most feasible, Old Glory should be given legal protection against desecration. We condemn decisions by activist judges to deny children the opportunity to say the Pledge of Allegiance in public school.

The Fairness Doctrine

We support freedom of speech and freedom of the press and oppose attempts to violate or weaken those rights, such as reinstatement of the so-called Fairness Doctrine.

Abortion

Faithful to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence, we assert the inherent dignity and sanctity of all human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity and dignity of innocent human life.

We have made progress. The Supreme Court has upheld prohibitions against the barbaric practice of partial-birth abortion. States are now permitted to extend health-care coverage to children before birth. And the Born Alive Infants Protection Act has become law; this law ensures that infants who are born alive during an abortion receive all treatment and care that is provided to all newborn infants and are not neglected and left to die. We must protect girls from exploitation and statutory rape through a parental notification requirement. We all have a moral obligation to assist, not to penalize, women struggling with the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy. At its core, abortion is a fundamental assault on the sanctity of innocent human life. Women deserve better than abortion. Every effort should be made to work with women considering abortion to enable and empower them to choose life. We salute those who provide them alternatives, including pregnancy care centers, and we take pride in the tremendous increase in adoptions that has followed Republican legislative initiatives.

Preserving Traditional Marriage

Because our children’s future is best preserved within the traditional understanding of marriage, we call for a constitutional amendment that fully protects marriage as a union of a man and a woman, so that judges cannot make other arrangements equivalent to it. In the absence of a national amendment, we support the right of the people of the various states to affirm traditional marriage through state initiatives.

Republicans have been at the forefront of protecting traditional marriage laws, both in the states and in Congress. A Republican Congress enacted the Defense of Marriage Act, affirming the right of states not to recognize same-sex “marriages” licensed in other states. Unbelievably, the Democratic Party has now pledged to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which would subject every state to the redefinition of marriage by a judge without ever allowing the people to vote on the matter. We also urge Congress to use its Article III, Section 2 power to prevent activist federal judges from imposing upon the rest of the nation the judicial activism in Massachusetts and California. We also encourage states to review their marriage and divorce laws in order to strengthen marriage.

Religious Liberties

Our Constitution guarantees the free exercise of religion and forbids any religious test for public office, and it likewise prohibits the establishment of a state-sponsored creed. The balance between those two ideals has been distorted by judicial rulings which attempt to drive faith out of the public arena. The public display of the Ten Commandments does not violate the U.S. Constitution and accurately reflects the Judeo-Christian heritage of our country. We support the right of students to engage in student-initiated, student-led prayer in public schools, athletic events, and graduation ceremonies, when done in conformity with constitutional standards.

We affirm every citizen’s right to apply religious values to public policy and the right of faith-based organizations to participate fully in public programs without renouncing their beliefs, removing religious objects or symbols, or becoming subject to government-imposed hiring practices. Forcing religious groups to abandon their beliefs as applied to their hiring practices is religious discrimination. We support the First Amendment right of freedom of association of the Boy Scouts of America and other service organizations whose values are under assault, and we call upon the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to reverse its policy of blacklisting religious groups which decline to arrange adoptions by same-sex couples. Respectful of our nation’s diversity in faith, we urge reasonable accommodation of religious beliefs in the private workplace. We deplore the increasing incidence of attacks against religious symbols, as well as incidents of anti-Semitism on college campuses.

----

That's just a bit of their 2008 platform. Now let's not pretend this is anywhere near what Pres. Obama is advancing as our President and leader of the Democratic Party.

He might not be as progressive as some of you would like, but to suggest he's running on a 2008 Republican platform defies reality and is a cheap and ridiculous argument. Oddly enough, it's an argument made by a man who helped elect a president who - if you read through what I posted above - oversaw a great deal of the Republican's push to the right.

That includes, but is not limited to...

  • Welfare Reform
  • NAFTA
  • Don't Ask, Don't Tell
  • Defense of Marriage Act
  • The Telecom Reform Act & Financial Services Modernization Act

But I'm sure Carville knew that.

Out of what I listed, from climate change to abortion, has Pres. Obama taken all of the GOP's ideas?

He hasn't. Maybe Carville was confused and meant his old boss, Bill Clinton.
