President Obama sets plan to train 10,000 engineers a year
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=13826278

President Barack Obama is announcing details of a program to train 10,000 new American engineers every year.

Seeking ways to brighten a bleak employment picture, Obama traveled to Durham, N.C., on Monday to hear job-creation ideas from the corporate leaders who sit on his jobs council. One idea he emerged to announce was the engineering training program.

Obama says American companies, like computer chip maker Intel Corp., need the brightest American workers if they want to continue as leaders in technology and innovation.

Under the program, Obama says private companies will join the government to promote education in science, technology, engineering and math. They'll offer incentives to students to finish their degrees and help universities pay for their engineering programs.

1. Sounds like a mix of supply and demand side solutions to me.
I don't see anything wrong with it.

5. Cheap engineers
If they would actually pay $80-100K salaries, I'm sure they could get lots of qualified engineers. Or if they considered people over 40. With the unemployment where it is, and considering the number of "discouraged workers", any need they have could be filled tomorrow.

9. We are importing engineers. I know because a lot of them live in my town.
My daughter goes to school with some of their kids. They are nice but the idea that we aren't hiring engineers from India and other places is not true.

12. we are still hiring computer programmers from India, and Brazil, and Costa Rica
we need to focus on job creation - the supply will follow. History has taught us that over and over.

14. Yes, it is magic
The economy heals itself and jobs magically appear, well, just because of the free market! Obama STILL isn't grasping the fundamental problem: offshoring of jobs. Training people for jobs that we shipping off shore or driving wages down of the existing jobs by importing workers is THE problem. at

All his job training talk is just shit. Why not DIRECTLY employ engineers in local and state governments? Oh because we need to reduce the deficit and stamp out socialism!

The economy is not going to improve until WE CHANGE it. Obama isn't changing it, he's perpetuating the banks, the oil companies, the MIC, etc. So enjoy our lost decades and slide into third world poverty!
