1. He talked openly about secession
and if you don't think his opponents will use that against him you're crazy.

But I can imagine the gist is that we can pray away all the problems-and God is punishing us for having that Muslim atheist mixed-race guy in the WH.

3. I think the memory of the *other* brain-dead, asswipe of a Texas Governor
and the monumental damage he inflicted on the country may still be too fresh in the minds of our citizens for this to be workable. Give it 8 years, though..

7. Texas prison labor puts manufacturer out of business
http://tylerpaper.com/article/20080824/OPINION0301/808240310

The Jacksonville Republican has taken on a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison labor program, which he says has already driven a Lufkin manufacturer out of business, and is now threatening others.

"Prison work programs can be a good thing, but not when they cost the jobs of law-abiding men and women," says Nichols.

"No Texan should lose his livelihood to businesses unfairly subsidized by prison labor."

Part of the Texas "miracle"

9. Creepy ... Bush clone.
Yuck ... I can't stand this guy.

That being said, however, I am not so sanguine about Pres. Obama's reelection effort as many are here at DU.

I handicap the 2012 presidential race as close ... and with a Repuglican nominee like Perry there is the chance that Obama will not get reelected.

Especially if the economy is down and average Americans are casting about for some dramatic change because of their fiscal frustration. Frankly, I think that the voter in 2012 may be irrational, easily swayed by appeals to fear and nationalism, the kind of rhetoric a guy like Perry is going to be very good at.

What I want and what I can see happening are two different things -- and Democrats, liberals and progressive better not be too confident that Obama is a shoe-in because they think the Repuglican candidates are too crazy.

14. Funny thing is....I don't think the Bush regime supports his bid for President.
I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because he's a tea partier, and Bush and Rove and Bush regime are traditional GOP uber-conservatives but not tea partiers. Rove hates Palin, for instance, and thinks she's a dunce.

13. visiting with some repub relatives this weekend
A couple expressed support for Perry. Others shot them down (and these are repubs speaking) that Perry's albatross is that he will be tied to GWBush as another "Texas governor" and the general public doesn't have any desire for another round of that.

15. He's the Glenn Beck candidate. He will have fervent followers...also lotsof money behind him
He's one that I worry about, however, I don't think any of them have a chance in hell of beating Obama in a debate. Problem is, a lot of people don't watch the debates and vote based on soundbites.

17. Excellent point!
He is not all he "claims" to be, and when the facts come out he won't look so hot to most republicans. As you said the right wing nut jobs will love him, but that won't get him the nomination!

20. Perry is almost certainly going to run...
As another poster mentioned though, he has not been vetted yet.

He's such a sort of natural choice for the GOP to run that I am suspicious the reason he has stayed out so far is because he's got a closet full of skeletons.

If he can make it through more intense media scrutiny though, I do think he could win the nomination and be a tough opponent.

26. He has destroyed Texas, and is much worse than Bush.
Of course the full ramifications won't be felt until years from now when the enture state is a toxic wasteland.

He is a disgusting man and oh so smooth. His past may keep him out of the running for prez though. Too much in the closet.

..if the skeletons are going to be that easy to dig up, why has no-one in Texas succeeded in doing so? I understand that the Obama campaign would be able to unearth pretty much whatever the fuck it wants to (and subsequently rub it in his ridiculous face), but surely the suspicion has to be that there exists only unsubstantiated rumour and hearsay at this point.

31. Because Texas is corrupt. If you don't live here, you wouldn't understand.
It may be only rumors with no substance, but from what I've heard, I doubt it. Within the borders of Texas, Perry has been safe. Out in the real world, we'll see.
