All is not lost? President Obama raised $86M,
more than all rethugs combined, according to Ed Shultz as of tonight. I guess there are some people who still believe.

Not bad. :D

1. On one of the shows today they gave the number of the
first time donors -- impressive! (Sorry, don't remember for sure, but it was either 60-some thousand or 160-some thousand. Probably the lesser of the two, but still wow!)

12. If it did I didn't catch it, but I don't think so -- I think they
were just saying "Obama" but I could be wrong.

But what's your point? I'm missing it.

24. Well honestly, I'm glad the DNC got a chunk, too! I don't think
Obama will have all that much trouble personally, and the DNC can always use it. Maybe they can get a kick-ass leader. :7

next time.

13. I agree with babylonsister - if these donors didn't care about
the homeless and those in need, they would have contributed to the Republicans. I heard average donation was like $68, so these are real people who don't want it to get worse for those who are already hurting. IMO.

6. I am happy he has raised more than all the Republicans
because it's money that wins elections. The good thing is if most of that money came from small donors is that Obama should be more likely to have the backs and watch out for the interests of the little people. Now if he was getting millions from businesses or special interest groups my suspicion would be that they would expect something in return for all the money they give.

So I am relieved to know that I can believe like I did for those months up to the election in 2008.

Obama Losing His Base? Here Are 552,000 Reasons Why That's Wrong

Mother Jones:

"So, Obama can rake in the big bucks—no surprise there. The real story is the 552,000 donors who gave to the Obama 2012 effort, “more grassroots support at this point in the process than any campaign in political history,” said campaign manager Jim Messina in a video message to supporters. Messina said that 98 percent of donations last quarter were under $250, and that the average donation was $69.

That haul throws a huge bucket of cold water on claims that Obama is losing his liberal/Democratic base. Pollster James Zogby wrote in September 2009 that Democrats were souring on Obama after the health-insurance-reform fight and for his policies on the war in Afghanistan. Liberal TV host Ed Schultz told former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs last year that “you’re losing your base.” If Obama’s donor rolls are any indication, the left appears to be just as motivated in the 2012 race as they were in 2008.

Of course, reams of polling data have been reinforcing this for months. According to Gallup polling, Obama’s approval rating among Democrats has held steady at around 80 percent, give or take a few percentage points, since September of last year. Among liberals, Obama’s doing almost as well, with approval ratings hovering around 70 percent; it’s currently 76 percent.

So all that talk of Democrats and liberals sloughing off Obama? Nothing to it. Today’s fundraising numbers prove Obama’s still hugely popular, and that whomever the GOP picks to run against him will face the major undertaking of matching the powerful Obama fundraising machine."

And Ari Melber, of The Nation, said last night (on Lawrence O'Donnell) that this president enjoys a higher level of support/approval among Liberals (at this point in his presidency) than any Democratic president in the past fifty (50) years. :hi:

edit to add: A whopping 260,000 of these were brand spanking new donors. :bounce:

18. The devil is in the details
Most of it does come from individuals rather than PACs (the mechanism by which corporations can contribute to candidates). But many individual contributions are brought in by "bundlers" who bring in large sums of money donated by individuals in their company or their industry. This is where you see all of those big numbers for large industries on opensecrets.org. It's from individuals who work in those industries.

Now, some of these individuals are just Democrats who want to contribute to the President. But some of it also comes from bundlers who gather this money from individuals with an understanding that their company or industry will have access to the Obama Administration.

27. It's not the money Obama and the DNC has raised.
While it is huge it's the PAC money that our USSC has allowed with the unlimited anonomous donations that fall outside the contributions to the political parties that matters. The ultra right is amasing a huge warchest to inundate the media with their lies when the election is close. I only hope the dems message can get through the onslaught that the right will unleash. I fear it will be too much to overcome. Never overestimate the intelligence of the american voter.
