Just wondering -- Has there been any vote count lately on a clean bill? |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-29-11 10:19 AM by Armstead
With all the brouhaha going on about vote counts for the Boner Bill, the Reid Bill, etc. has there been any vote count of the "Let's just sign the damn debt ceiling without all this bullshit" Option?
I know the tea party people are holding out. But perhaps an alignment of unanimous Democratic votes and sane Republicans (plus a few of the tea party defectors that were willing to go with Boner Bill) could pass a Cleasn Bill in the House and similar in the Senate. Any talk of that?

1. No GOPer is going to nod at a clean bill until all other options are exhausted |
|
It would be as impossible to get a vote count on that now as it would be to get Obama to actively threaten a 14th Amendment option at this point. If the existing bills go down in flames, then, yes, we'll start to see the numbers, threats, promising, bribes, and other arm-twisting on the clean bill.

2. It seems like a simple solution at this point, as the options are exhausted |

3. The options aren't exhausted |
|
The Boehner bill with the BBA reinserted will come up this afternoon.
The Reid bill, with McConnell amendments will come up in the next few days.
Those are both options that GOPers are waiting out. They won't raise their hand as being behind a clean bill until both those moves fail.

4. I guess I was being silly thinking we might escape a GOP budget |
|
I was thinking maybe the Democrats might push for the sane and clean solution at this point instead of the GOP Reid budget, since the GOP is sort of like a wounded dog at this point.

Now put yourself in the shoes of one of the 30 or so GOP Representatives we'd need to pass that through the House. is that person going to stand up now, with the other bills still on the table, and say, "Yeah, you know what? I'm going to go with a clean bill as of today!"
That has zero chance of happening until the other options are exhausted. Wounded dog or not.

7. Well that's why I was wondering about a vote count, because there's a poossibility.... |
|
there may be enough Republicans would might want to look (and be) responsible and just get the thing done. This is getting more embarrassing for them than us.
Probably not, but a possibility worth considering I guess.

8. Oh, I think we could pull them to vote on the clean bill for sure |
|
But I don't think any of them will commit until everything else craps out.
