Nine (Not Very) Shocking Photos from the DC Earthquake
Josh Marshall: Nine (Not Very) Shocking Photos from the DC Earthquake

This picture of the rubble outside the National Cathedral in DC is my favorite picture of the toll in DC so far.

Washington, D.C. was a-Twitter Tuesday when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Virginia. TPM takes a look at the quake's "aftermath."

Outside the National Cathedral in Washington, where one of the building's spires suffered damage, rubble could be seen piled up on the stairs.

1. Rec'd to zero.
I guess someone was really pulling for POTUS to abandon his lousy-optics, la-z-boy vacation and have a bullhorn moment.

Then they could bash him for political posturing.

5. I did see some footage of some parts of a building that had
fallen off and wrecked the cars parked below. Thankfully, that's the worst I've seen so far.

piled up."

9. The ODSers are in full effect, creaming their pants to blame Obama
There's one problem, though! All federal and non-federal employees were safely evacuated, and even the METRO is almost back to normal. There was little or no damage caused from the earthquake. Some broken glass in the Smithsonian; damage to the Cathedral that will be repaired. Other than that, absolutely nothing! It is a gorgeous day! People are out on the Mall, running and walking and enjoying Happy Hour. Even the Nationals will carry on tonight and play baseball.

11. Real
'The central tower on the Washington National Cathedral—the highest point in Washington, D.C.—suffered serious damage . . .

The earthquake knocked off the cross-shaped finial stones on three of the four pinnacles that jut out from the top of the tower. The top of one pinnacle is leaning inward.'

13. When I read online---I thought it said onion.
Yeah, I'll wait for the pics. This is definitely a church that has been in need of repairs for decades and the Archdiocese never bothered.

15. NOT related to Archdiocese, Nat'l Cathedral is Episcop,
was under construction for MANY years, and undergoes continuous refurbishment.

You may be thinking of Shrine of Immaculate Conception.

14. Yes,
it's real, and significant in the sense of the restoration that will be required, but this is not massive damage.

Here is the official press release.
