1. Reschedule - avoid a petty squabble. nt

4. That...
Would be the worst possible option, in my opinion. This is gamesmanship. POTUS has too many cards to play. The public will back him.

10. No they won't - the public is tired of petty partisan squabbling
neither side is looking good in the public's eyes at the moment.

The question is simple - why does the speech have to be that day? If there is no clear simple answer then I suggest the president find another hill to charge.

22. The speech should be that day because it is the first day that Congress ...
returns to Washington and there is nothing more urgent thatn creating jobs. If the Republicans believe that their dog and pony show is more important than putting Americans back to work, then make them say so.

29. Hell, it just happened. Give it a couple of news cycles and force the Repugs to repeat ...
over and over that jobs are of secondary importance to their little debate, and then let's see how things shake out.

3. Address the Senate. . .
. . .and explain that the Speaker of the House would not cooperate when it came to helping put America back to work.

13. I agree.
It is time to show the Republicans for what they stand for, which is anything that opposes this administration.

8. He should have his speech anyway
telling Congress that putting American's to work is the most important business of the country and its government right now.

9. How is this a "win" for Obama?
I really don't understand why the President picked the date he picked, and what benefit it gives him.

Can someone explain that? Was no other date possible?

If the idea was to start a fight, what does he gain by starting one over the timing of his speech, why not pick a real issue to fight over?

I'm open to plausible explanations. Anyone have any to offer?

30. I won't pretend to know Obama's reasoning...
9/7 is the day that Congress returns to DC after their August vacation.

Perhaps, Obama believes that putting the unemployed back to work is URGENT enough to address a Joint Session on the seventh.

If Boehner refuses to invite the President, or DeMint gums up the works---Obama can give his Jobs' Speech elsewhere. Win-Win for the President!

11. This is same night as Republican Debate. The rule is the Speaker
controls the House.

If they could schedule it so it on the same evening
but not at the same hour. All sides win. The Repubs
will get more exposure. The President gets his chance.
Americans are winners --they get to see the President
and the Candidates.

12. Either just address the Senate or do an Oval Office address, only after demanding the 7th.
for a joint session of Congress. Just do NOT move the date or time of the address.

15. The debate can be postponed an hour, and
#1: The president has a constitutional right to convene a joint session. #2: We have a national crisis that he is addressing (jobs). #3: There are only two participants in the debate that would be directly affected (Bachmann and Paul). #4: It's a matter of respecting the OFFICE of president.
So, I absolutely believe he should hold it on the seventh, as planned.

a low-level freak show.

18. Cite the scheduling problem for Congress and
go straight to the American People by having the speech broadcast from the Oval Office. Take a page out of the Reagan playbook & go around Congress.

Of course, the networks might elect not to carry his speech anyway. That would be insulting.

27. Actually,
As it was mentioned above, the president has a Constitutional right to convene the Congress, so he should do so, and address a half empty chamber on live TV. I question if the Republican Senators will show up any more than the Republican Representatives. Let the event show the country, on live TV, just what is more important to the GOP.... The good of the country or making sure a political debate doesn't have to be postponed for 1/2 an hour or so.

BIG (if he had a more "reasonable" speech in mind).
