I'm seeing a media meme develop re: the President's speech |
|
it seems to be going like this: 1. It was a good speech and the plan has merits 2. Unfortunately we can count on the republicans in congress to fuck it up. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-fi-obama-business-reaction-20110910,0,5027878.storyObama jobs plan spurs cautious hope among businesses http://abcnews.go.com/Business/president-obamas-jobs-plan-economists-differ-long-term/story?id=14476449Economists Support President's Job Proposals, Worry About Do-Nothing Congress

3. As long as he stays out there in front of the country on this issue |
|
people *should* know whom to blame for something not getting done. He and/or the Democrats in Congress and DNC need to make clear whom is and whom is NOT responsible for any obstruction on this issue and call the irresponsible ones out. I expect that the plan won't be adopted 100% as he laid it out and I fully expect there to be some "horse trading" here and there but what matters is if something is actually getting done IMHO. In the wake of his speech and the importance of this issue, I fail to see how Congress (Republican Tea Party) can simply fail to act on this IMHO. If I'm wrong, I hope the Republicans pay for it dearly at the polls next year.

4. I don't see anything getting done ... |
|
There story about the scorpion and the frog applies.
The Rs will NOT be able to help themselves, and will keep asking for more and more and more while deep inside not wanting to give the "satisfaction" to BO of having a big bill passed. It will turn into the debt ceiling thing again, except unlike the debt ceiling, they don't HAVE to get something done, so they won't.
Just can't see the House for sure getting anything passed, and the senate with the filibuster.

6. If all we have is waiting for the next election then we have big problems. |
|
How many more people will lose their jobs and benefits between now and January 2013? How many more people will run out of unemployment benefits between now and then? The American people want action now, not 17 months from now. A lot of people can't make it for another 17 months.

5. I know. Instead of jumping right to "the Republicans will never pass his jobs bill" |
|
I wish they'd say instead-- we're going to join the president in asking every Republican guest about their specific priorities regarding job creation versus maintaining tax cuts for the mega-rich.

7. That will help him get it passed if he can. He backed them into a corner |
|
by pointing out that they needed to pass it now. He also made it clear that they had been obstructing everything up until now. Add that they went home and heard it from the people. And now he is going to take it to the people. So far so good.
I do want to know more about his idea of a big 3 reform.

11. Good. Point #2 is the message that the voters need to receive: |
|
Congressional Republicans screw stuff up.
