American Nurses Association supports health reform
December 18 letter (PDF)

Dear Senator Reid:

On behalf of the American Nurses Association (ANA), the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation’s 2.9 million Registered Nurses through its 51 constituent member associations, I am writing to urge you to keep the democratic process moving in the Senate by voting to end debate on H.R. 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Nurses across this country have waited decades for this historic moment and the time is at hand. While political maneuvering delays reform, our patient’s needs are not on hold. The uninsured and underinsured continue to delay or forgo much-needed care; they continue to arrive in the emergency rooms across the country for conditions that could have been easily prevented with access to primary care—we are paying a high price for inaction. Quality health care for all should not be a partisan or political issue.

While we realize that no piece of legislation is perfect, we also realize that doing nothing is not an option. We know that passage of H.R. 3590 represents our only hope for much-needed, comprehensive, and meaningful reform of our nation’s healthcare system. America’s nurses understand the cost of inaction—we cannot afford to wait—it must be done before the end of the year.

Once again, the need for fundamental reform of the U.S. health care system is critical. ANA and nurses around the country are ready to work with you. We are almost there. Please vote YES to end the debate on H.R. 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and move the process forward towards a final vote of passage.

Sincerely,
Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR
President

1. Okay, I'll kick for the Nurses Association.
I can kinda see why there are a lot of Progressives who are thinking it's a good idea to pass it now.

With the history of nothing ever getting done before but also the way other important bills got started small and grew over the years.

Imagine future politicians campaigning on vows to add more to the Health Bill and, of course, the repukes would campaign on doing more nothing.

10. Does it really matter?! They're both nurses associations and both in different camps.

One is not nicer than the other. You I don't see why you're trying to make that sort of differentiation in order to prove a point. It makes your position utterly silly and extremely childish.

Edited for spelling.

13. National Nurses United = 150,000 members
American Nurses Association = 2.9 million members

NNU is a labor union. ANA is the professional organization that represents nurses (probably includes most, if not all, members of the NNU).

So I would say that on balance, the endorsement of the ANA, along with the prior endorsement of the AMA, is a pretty big deal.

5. Apparently, you can't stomach the fact that the largest nurse's organization exposes your propaganda

Look. You have your own opinion. That's fine. And you found information to support your position. You push what the OP's post as something to support his propaganda but the same could be said about your post. It doesn't matter what association is bigger than the other, and I don't know why you have to be petty about this. This organization is also a very large nurse's association and I'm a bit surprised you'd scoff at their position and make it seem as though it's the OPs ulterior motive. Are you then going to suggest s/he or Rahm strongarmed this group? They are extremely credible and the support HRC, end of story.

I'm getting fed up with this one upman-ship.

14. The headline is misleading. It may be the largest union, but not the largest nursing organization.
Edited on Tue Dec-22-09 01:18 PM by izzybeans
The org in this thread isn't a union it is a professional association that focusing on education and workforce development.

The two taken together could read as a disagreement between frontline nurses and DONs, but that's probably taken the comparison too far.

The NNU was formally founded less than a month ago fwiw (its founding convention was at the beginning of this month). Its a coalition between a handful of what look to be formerly state level nurses unions. ANA is akin to the American Psychological Association, Sociological Association etc. Members of these orgs are also members of the AAUP, the professors union. There are often disagreements between the two.

What a surprise, Arianna posting midleading headlines . . . again.
