oh for fuck's face... people did NOT run o the recruiter
I know this for a FACT. I did... could not join due to a Chief problem who was on the line already... and the poor 80 something B-17 pilot!

If anything they were shocked that they did not have people standing outside waiting for numbers to reports back in three months, (like WW II).. David Gregory is repeating that canard on the TV right now... Americans did NOT rush to the recruiters... my neighbor WAS a Navy Recruiter and they kept having trouble meeting quota...

I hate it when people rewrite history.

Yes there was a great trauma, but no, it wasn't December 8th, 1941

1. Often, in fact, the most hardcore militarist types
were the LAST to volunteer...if they volunteered at all. And those bastards STILL thought they were entitled to bash people in the service who chose to become conscientious objectors after seeing the reality of combat.

5. But they did buy Hummers!
And listen to Toby Keith. They served in the grand chickenhawk tradition.

13. We also had a bunch of pro-war middle-class Yahoos harassing our weekly
antiwar vigil. When challenged to 'put up or shut up,' none of them would enlist. Chickenshit REMFs. All down with war, as long as it's poor white trash, latinos and blacks doing the fighting. But, like Cheney, they have 'other priorities,' you see.

REMF = Rear echelon mother fucker

16. I gave that DOD form to a Middle Class
pro war republican recently... at the coffe shop.

Hell, we asked my brother which of his two daughters was enlisting.

I have maintained the Draft is a class issue. THose opposed to it are the loudest pro war people I know... in the modern day. (As in real life)

18. The draft was, is and probably shall be a class issue, as long as
there are economic classes. The best way to prevent outrages like Iraq from ever happening ever again, imho, is universal military conscription. Somehow when the middle class' ass is on the line (or its kids' asses), the middle class suddenly discovers a whole new level of interest in politics. Funny, that.

19. Absolutely
I was one of them rare middle class kids who did volunteer (somewhere else) and it opened my eyes as to how the rest of the country lived too. That I consider a side, and important, benefit.

25. That would only work if there was a rule
that the children of Senators and Congresspeople could NEVER get exemptions(other than those congresskinder who actually OPPOSE said wars).

There would also have to be a requirement that children of government officials would HAVE to be sent to the front lines of any war.

8. Welcome back!!
I took a 5 year break, at least I think it was that long. I bet I will take another starting this week, lol. Spending too much time here is bad for a person spirit. It either makes you mean or discouraged. People tend to be more civil in the real world. Net Forums are like cocaine they tend to bring out the asshole in everyone. Nice observation as well, good post.

10. I went to see my recruiter with my DD214, and HE said:
"You'll get your orders right after we dig up Pat Nixon and send her into theatre..."

And then everyone in the office laughed like they had group sex with a laughing gas canister.

11. The B-17 pilot was told something similar
I was told... you are already serving, and you already did your active bit. and then there is this issue of enlisted\officer...

Office was so quiet, that this is why we struck a conversation.

And later on. my neighbor was a Navy recruiter... one of his kids kept calling my husband... now that was a funny. Would you like a career in the USN. Have you thought NAVY? Son you ARE calling Navy housing.

31. According to neighbor, who was a Navy Recruiter
they saw a spike for about six months, but nothing too significant. They never had to do what they did in WW II. Here is a number. we'll call you.
