6. I think it depends on what you're trying to accomplish |
|
by arguing. If it is to "win" then you cannot but that goes with most topics. If people have their stakes at two opposite positions, defending it at all costs then you can't do it or it certainly isn't "fun". Arguments can reveal how we come to our own conclusions so it can be very helpful, especially when we see where we are wrong. Important to stay on-topic.
If the dispute is factual, than that is very easy to settle. If two disagree what the answer is for 2+2 you look it up.
It gets a little murkier when you are trying to argue which movie or TV show is better.

12. I think that is a good example |
|
of staking out a position and defending it all costs. I agree this probably true for a lot of people that buy into conspiracy theories(I myself am open-minded both ways) but I see it on all sorts of topics.
An example off the top of my head is when someone concerned about cannabis starts a thread, usually it has some well known myths usually from a government website or an anti-drug organization(that are heavily funded by alcohol and tobacco industries). The thread will balloon to over 103 replies with many pointing out the facts and next week the same poster starts another thread with some of the same misinformation. Such as gateway.
Now I'm on one side of that fence so it probably isn't a good idea I use that example, but it is the first thing that came to mind. However, I imagine there are those on my side of the fence are very closed minded about any facts that don't outright agree with.

|
was not what she says. that simple. but that is as far as i can go on it. there has to be something there to push it to the point of "know"

And short form birth control would be bad.
Sorry for being off topic. It's a weird day at my house.

11. Start with "Osama has been dead for years, on ice at CIA headquarters" |
|
Doesn't make sense, If Osama was on ice, Bush would have thawed him out before the end of his term.
Anyway, seen more than a few threads with that theme.

when it comes to things like the JFK assassination, Roswell, Area 51, September 11th...official government statements don't make sense.
Granted, they may or may not be conspiracies, I just think there's better explanations that need to be found.
