Why was Bin Laden buried at sea? |
|
Was any consideration given that this might spark a whole new spat of conspiracy theories? The US government is low on trust from people around the world since at least 2002.

1. I think the idea was to prevent a shrine for him to be worshipped at by followers. |

14. And which country would accept him? |

I guess he could have been buried at Gitmo. Doubtful a grave there would become a shrine.

23. There's a bit of irony in that particular fear though. |
|
Osama bin Laden was an ardent believer and advocate of Wahhabist Islamic thought which, among other things, believes that it is evil to venerate the dead or sites associated with historical activity. To this day, Wahhabi's routinely destroy tombs and mausoleums because they promote "idolatry", and they were recently criticized globally for bulldozing a number of archaeological sites on the Arabian peninsula because they MIGHT have been associated with Muhammed or his immediate followers, and they didn't want the sites to become shrines.
It would have been the greatest of ironies if OBL's own grave had become a shrine to his followers.
In a way, we gave him exactly the burial he would have wanted.

And his last residence can easily be made a shrine, as can several other locations with significance. It wont matter that his body isn't there.

7. Because S. Arabia apparently wouldn't take the body... |
|
they hoped not to potentially inflame Muslims with a failure to appropriately deal with the body within 24 hours; Islam does not allow for cremation; and most importantly, they did not want to create a site for pilgrimage that might encourage his minions.
I won't get into the conspiracy stuff, but I do believe they will likely release the photos and perhaps a statement from a wife that identified him and potentially video of the raid. Some could NEVER be convinced, just as some can still never be convinced Obama was born in this country.

11. That would be a good idea. |
|
I think a lot of conspiracy stuff is due to the dishonesty of the previous administration which led to an invasion of Iraq. Once trust is lost on such a major issue, it is hard if not near impossible to regain, especially unaddressed.

Apparently, our government and its financial supporters love to put brown stuff in our waters.
Unfortunately, they didn't learn the Megatron lesson.

he was part saudi, part yemen, and once those countries have said they won't touch him w. a ten foot pole, who's left? hell, saudi arabia even allowed idi amin (probably spelled wrong, but u know who i mean, that uganda freak) to live in exile there so if they turn away bin laden you have to figure he's too hot to handle
the ocean is internat'l waters, let the fish deal w. him
there were going to be conspiracy theories ANYWAY

It doesn't matter what Obama does, everything he does will spark controversy with some. It cannot be avoided.
