Leon Panetta, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, told Brian Williams in an interview on Tuesday that a photo of Osama bin Laden would eventually be released to the public.
“The government obviously has been talking about how best to do this, but I don't think there was any question that ultimately a photograph would be presented to the public,” Panetta said. “Obviously I've seen those photographs. We've analyzed them and there's no question that it's bin Laden.”
Panetta said that there were “concerns” within the administration about the potential impact of photos depicting the deceased leader of the Al Qaeda terrorist network. At a briefing with reporters on Tuesday, Press Secretary Jay Carney referred to them as “gruesome.”
They reportedly show the open wounds from the shot to the head that killed him.
