Mr President, if my dad was alive today...
Edited on Wed May-04-11 09:58 PM by Omaha Steve

My father was a Democrat. That doesn't mean he had blind faith. He was always mad FDR started the draft. It got my dad, and he was already in uniform on Dec 7th. He always defended Harry S. Truman on using the A bomb on homeland Japan. Dad rotated home on points just before it happened. But he had so many friends in the 25th Division that would not have survived an invasion.

My family was so moved when JFK and the "New Frontier" ended by assassination, not the ballot box.

I remember a conversation he had when I was in grade school hoping that I his only son would not have to fight in the ongoing war in Nam. I think it was 1968 that the fine kid down the street died when his base was overrun. The Nam War ended just before I graduated in 75.

You get the idea. Dad had seen enough war in his tour in the Pacific Theater.

We lost dad in 94. He had a beautiful military service.

I know IF he was alive today, he would be so proud of the current Commander in Chief!

1. Great post Steve. My Dad was a lifelong Democrat too, Lost him in '07
Fought at Attu (only Japanese occupied American soil) and Kwajalein. He sent his ribbons back to Reagan in protest of the disaster at Beirut because he felt Reagan was entirely to blame.

I graduated in '76, but I remember hearing he and my mom seriously discussing moving to Canada when I started HS in '72.

He would be proud of his Commander in Chief too.

2. That generation knew what it took to defend ourselves.
Sometimes I think we are so far removed that we expect bloodless miracle operations.

4. My dad was a WW2 USAAF navigator who volunteeered.
He NEVER talked about the war to us although he did discuss it a bit with my son.

He was horrified when "shock and awe" occurred. He was of course horrified on 9/11. He LOATHED war after his tour of duty.

He would have not lost a moment's fret over ObL's killing and he was by far the most compassionate and moral person I ever knew. That's my dad. I'm a little uncomfortable but I think we had no choice; the man had to be stopped.

5. That fine young man down the street was Dennis

I knew Dennis very well. His mom learned of his death while watching the nightly news. She knew when she saw that his camp was gone that Dennis was gone too. It was a couple days before she was notified by the government.
