Does Mitt really have a chance of being GOP nominee?
He was a state executive, he can walk and chew gum, he doesn't question Obama's citizenship or patriotism and he's not rabidly anti-Muslim. Does he REALLY stand a chance of being the Republican nominee?

1. this is going to be a crazy primary. The establishment wants Romney but the primary voters can't
stand him. They love the whacko of the week.
Who will win?

6. I have a feeling this is going to be one of the funniest campaigns ever
They are going to be attacking each other left and right and they won't be paying attention to the Democrats for once.

7. He does, imo as a throwaway. But I see maybe pawlenty as the true favorite as of now.
It's possible he could end up as a VP for pawlenty too. Their main problem is finding a candidate that appears moderate to the nation and at the same time get the extremeists to vote. The GOP as it is has no tolerence for moderates so appeasing to the factions seems next to impossible. Like they said in the beginning "we need Obama to fail" describes their situation best.

10. It was a conundrum last time, and this time will be no different
He has the most mainstream appeal, and he's the kind of conservative who sounds - comparatively speaking -- sane to moderates. He might represent their best shot in a head to head with President Obama. But, he will have two huge obstacles:

TCOJC&LDS: Even with the endorsements of several religious leaders, Romney could not get the votes of a lot of Fundie voters who see TCOJC&LDS as a cult.

Romneycare: It looks remarkably like the plan a well-known Democrat came up with. The comparisons will not be missed in the primaries.

11. Romney's problem is that he's not authentic...
The guy was a Rockefeller Republican in the 1990s, ran as a business savvy conservative in 2008 and is now a no-tie wearing moderate-conservative populist in 2012.

What does he actually believe?

13. I am torn
on the one hand, anyone nominated by one of the 2 major parties has at least some chance of winning. Romney is, at least, not nuts. I would far rather see him as president than any of the other repub candidates. OTOH, he has I think a better chance at winning than any of the others. So, which is better; the repubs nominating someone who is at least not a lunatic, but who has a better chance of winning, or nominating an obvious loonie/moron/crackpot like Gingrich,Bachman or Palin, who arguably has a smaller chance of winning? I don't know.

16. I'm torn too. Of all of them I could stand Romney, the others don't even make my list. But
I don't want to run the risk of Romney possibly winning.

17. One Point-in 2008, McCain didn't "win" the primaries...
Edited on Thu May-05-11 11:04 PM by brooklynite
He was the last one left who didn't "lose".

Given the weakness of the field, it's hard to guess who'll be standing at the end.

24. Sadly (For Them), He's The Best They've Got
The absolute best of the ENTIRE bunch. And Obama would wipe the floor with him. Just wait until some of the details from his past start coming back to haunt him. Why, his books alone are a treasure trove of weapons to beat him over the head with.
