+244,000 jobs in April.... largest monthly increase since February 2006

Capping a great week for Obama.

The increase to 9.0% in the household survey is because 500,000 more people came back into the job market... and why did they do that?

Because they're optimistic about finding a job.

7 straight months of job increases, the last couple more than +200,000.

It's turning around.... and this is very good news for the country and for President Obama.

2. 50,000 of those jobs were from McDonalds, weren't they? (LINK)
McDonald's hiring 50,000 workers today

I really hope the rest of those jobs are better...

5. I bet they pay minimum wage...no benefits.
So people spend all that money on college, get themselves into debt, so they can be a McWorker the rest of their lives.

American unemployment is 9.0% for March, Canadian unemployment is 7.7% for March. Canada added 90,600 jobs, which is equivalent to 906,000 jobs in US terms (since US population is 10 times more), versus only 244,000 jobs added in the US. Based on what it would be for equal populations, Canada would have created 662,000 more jobs than the US did (906,000 vs 244,000).

9. Good for Canada... but they're banks didn't cause a collapse in 2008 like ours

You guys didn't have to recover from a catastrophe like we did.

You guys didn't have to recover from Bush.

10. The Canadian population is less then the population of California..
USA = over 300 million people

Canada = 33 million people

California = 36 million people

Love Canada but we are just on a different scale.

15. Canada has 1 person per capita just as California does and as the entire US does
Edited on Fri May-06-11 05:19 PM by murphyj87
The difference between Canada and the US and Canada is not population but it is a philosophical and ideological one. The minimum wage varies from province to province, but averages $9.50 CDN ($10.00 US) an hour, and Canada is highly unionized (even Walmart Canada is unionized in most provinces) and always will be.

16. Even a Canadian neo-con like Harper..
Edited on Fri May-06-11 05:12 PM by murphyj87
Even a Canadian neo-con like Harper would be more like a Blue Dog Democrat in US terms. Harper is committed to increasing federal payment for single payer health care by 6% a year....yes, neo-con Canadians support single payer, or more correctly, know that there would be Conservative blood in the streets if they didn't support it......

11. Cue the Boner: "Where are the jooooooooobs???"
You can be sure the only figure the reich-wing will highlight is the unemployment rate...and most Americans will see that one number and decide that things are much worse than expected. :-(

13. And yet for three of the last four weeks, first time unemployment claims were up.
Somehow I think that has more to with the rise to nine percent than anybody wants to admit.

14. The report showed that those unemployed for more than 6 months dropped significantly

Short term unemployment up, long term unemployment down.... good sign.

17. "The increase to 9.0% in the household survey is because 500,000 more people.."
"The increase to 9.0% in the household survey is because 500,000 more people came back into the job market"

This is completely false.

The unemployment rate rose because the household survey showed a decline of 190,000 jobs. The UE rate is based on the household survey, not the payroll survey.
