Crew members on Justin Bieber’s tour refuse go to Japan for shows because of radiation
http://www.blackbookmag.com/article/justin-biebers-crew-mutinies-over-japan-trip/25756

May 05, 2011

Justin Bieber’s Crew Mutinies Over Japan Trip Justin Bieber's crew is staging a mutiny over the prospect of the heartthrob's tour going to Japan. The tour is currently in Australia, where some crew members told manager Scooter Braun that they wouldn't go to Osaka and Tokyo on May 17 for fear of radiation from the recent nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi. Braun told the crew, "Man the fuck up and do the right thing by these kids." Sounds like a melodramatic TV movie.

During this same meeting, the traitorous crew pointed out that Avril Lavigne and Slash, of all people, had canceled their Japan tours. Braun fired back that Maroon 5 hadn’t canceled theirs. The two sides are still at loggerheads, and the status of Bieber’s Japan tour is up in the air. A bunch of cowards, all of them! Japan has had a terrible spring and Japanese tweens deserve to see the Bieber. MORE AT LINK

1. Considering how much Japan has suffered, Bieber, Slash, and Levigne SHOULD stay away.
Hasn't Japan suffered enough you assholes?

3. If they said "do it or your fired" I'd sue for danger pay
I wouldn't touch that gig, triatorous roadies? Sounds like they're smarter than the producer who only has dollar signs in his eyes.

7. My elderly mother goes to Japan every year
I haven't the heart to tell her this year will not be a good one. Probably she would be safe enough, but the family has more significant things to worry about than dealing with a visit from their American relative. It's very sad all around.

I can't fault people for making decisions based on health.

8. The "traitorous crew"??????
Edited on Fri May-06-11 01:39 PM by Autumn Colors
F**k that crap. My ex-husband is a drum tech ("roadie") and I sure as hell wouldn't want him going over there. Screw that. The way the officials/media keep backpedalling on just how much radiation is in the air, soil, water ... who knows if they're telling the truth.

EDIT: Good idea posted upthread. Hire local Japanese crew for those shows.

EDIT #2: Most crew members are 1099ers (read: self-employed) which means "buy your own private insurance". Don't blame ANY of them for not wanting to risk their health anyway, but keep in mind they each probably pay 100% of their own health insurance, too.

14. Note that the gossip writer used that term...
and just because it is true, I will say that Beiber is in fact the only major performer I have ever heard talk about the health insurance issues his crew faces. I heard him mention that subject, and I've never heard anyone else even mention that their crew even exists. I give him a point for even knowing that his American crew is not insured and mentioning it to a journalist.

12. I'll bet the crew has no health insurance. They are smart to mutiny. The truth about the health...
....dangers are not being broadcast. Inside whistleblowers get the truth out occasionally via the internet.....

19. They might, but they would have bought it themselves
Crew are normally paid via 1099 (self-employed/independent contractors) and buy their own private insurance. When my ex (a drum tech) and I were still married, we had to buy our own because I was also self-employed and it cost us about $800 a month (I was in my 40s and he was/is in his 50s)!!
