&*#$*)(@# the MSM. I'm loving RT News.

Russia Today is on my cable service (236 on Time Warner Los Angeles) and what a refreshing relief. Thom Hartmann is on; I hadn't heard of him before, but he gains my eternal love for saying long and loud that Reagan's presidency was the most corrupt of any in our history, 11 tax increases for the poor and cuts for the rich, Iran/Contra, etc. And RT discussed the interesting stories that we invaded Iraq after Saddam announced his intent to trade his oil for Euros, not the dollar standard...and Gaddafy was just attempting to unify his local countries into a gold standard currency, and would only accept gold for his oil...I hadn't heard about that -at all- on the US MSM. Ed and Rachel aren't on all day so it's good to have "more" available. You might not like everything you see/hear but when do we ever?

1. Russia Today is not a news organization. It's a video tabloid, and they frequently make shit up.
Edited on Fri May-06-11 02:41 PM by TheWraith
It is one step short of being a clearinghouse for conspiracy theories.

For instance, the story about Libya only taking payment for oil in gold? Completely and totally false, and something that you will only find repeated on lunatic fringe websites. Not because of some huge conspiracy of silence by the "MSM," but because it's simply not TRUE. And basic math will show that. Libya's oil exports are about 1.5 million barrels per day. At $100 a barrel, that's $150 million dollars per day, or 1700 tons of gold per year. In comparison, the entire US gold stockpile is only about 8,100 tons.

2. Well, if they make things up, let the lawyers have at it.

4. You can't sue people for vague conspiracy theories on the internet.
And you can't sue people for pretending to be journalists. If you could, Fox News would long since be bankrupt.

8. One can only hope that Faux will reap its reward, regardless.
Should I not listen to Thom Hartmann? I'm new to him but love what I hear.

12. To say RT is not a news organization is nonsense
You may have a different worldview than that portrayed on RT, but that's OK. You might want to watch more of it with an open mind. It does paint a different picture than FOX and CNN. There are a lot of folks on DU that watch the CNN circus, believe the washington consensus, and think "navy seals rock," but not all of us are like that.

17. "A different worldview" is not a license to report things as fact which are simply false.
Russia Today does that on a routine basis. They are a clearing house for low-grade conspiracy theory nonsense.

22. You've provided no credible evidence to your baseless bullshit against this news organization.
Anything that doesn't reflect the Wraith's insane and twisted expectations of news are "frequently making shit up". You should check out the NYT and the Wall Street Journal's track record on that one...

23. I haven't been able to find a single major news source on the oil/gold thing.
It all seems to stem from the translation of a russian news article, but I have no idea how reliable that source is.

If anyone can find a major source on the oil/gold thing, please post. I'm intrigued by the whole thing now.

Also, the more I read about the Libyan economy, the more eerily similar it feels to the CIA's past economic subterfuge in latin america. Exactly the sort of state those with a constant free-market boner would want to attack and "restructure."

20. Between them, Al Jazeera and BBC America, the
only other news sources I need are Amy Goodman on Democracy Now!, as well as our progressive hosts on MSNBC. I'm looking forward to seeing what Keith Olbermann will be doing on Current TV when he debuts too. The only time I'm held hostage to Fox News and CNN is when I go to the gym or are forced to sit in a waiting room somewhere.
