MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- The House approved a bill today aimed at further blunting protests of funerals in Alabama by the controversial Westboro Baptist Church.
The Topeka, Kan.-based church, which routinely protests at the funerals of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, had threatened to demonstrate at the funerals of the 250 people killed in the tornado outbreak in Alabama last week.
The bill by Rep. DuWayne Bridges, R-Valley, sets a new perimeter of 1,000 feet, or two blocks, for any disruption of a funeral in Alabama. The perimeter had been 500 feet.
Passed on an 87-0 vote, the bill now goes to the Senate.
The church, which runs the website GodHatesFags.com, had earlier threatened to protest the funerals of six people killed in a January tornado in Rolla, Mo., but no one showed up. The church is listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery.
