Something odd I've noticed about Tim Pawlenty's speaking style
Edited on Fri May-06-11 06:50 PM by JohnnyRingo
Last night was the first time I ever payed any attention to him, but like many speech makers he uses his hands to emphasize his words. A well placed fist or an open palmed sweep of the hand is commonplace and useful behind any podium, but Pawlenty's gestures don't seem to match his mouth or the words that leak thereof.

As I watched I became so distracted by his seemingly random set of motions that I soon lost interest in what he was saying. It was like watching an ill timed Disney animatron figure that mechanically cycles through it's movements out of sync with the character's voice track. Maybe this is why pundits often cite his boring personality. It's like watching a poorly programmed robot read the dictionary. Most people will on to the River Raft ride soon after they learn the definition of "Aardvark".

Has anyone else noticed this?

1. I know the secret. He is a marionette.
I'll bet that's it. His handler probably speaks another language.

2. Sounds like Dave Barry's description of Nixon:
I loved it when Richard Nixon made speeches wherein he looked as though a large and disorganized committee of alien beings had taken over his body and were just learning how to operate it: (“Ok, Let’s try to wave. Who’s operating the arms?” “Me!” “No, me!” “NO . . . ,” etc.).

3. Yes, I have noticed that, as well. It is as though his mouth is concentrating on one thing
but his mind is trying to remember which words to emphasize by pointing his finger, shaking his fist or pounding the podium ...only 1/2 beat behind.

He definitely needs lessons on speaking in public.

5. Programmed by Rove coach
Cost a bunch. Forgot to do the rehearsed mannerisms at appropriate points, figuring that no one with less than a three digit IQ would notice.

6. This is crucial. It has been found that gesturing MUST precede the words.

It is universally understood by politicians in this day and age. Pay attention, and you will key in. Lawyers, and in particular professors have it DOWN COLD.
