Undocumented Workers: Unspoken Victims of Tornadoes in the South East
Edited on Fri May-06-11 06:46 PM by TNLib
I would have written about this a few days ago but I have been without power till today.
I live in South East TN I have in laws in Alabama.

My inlaws told me about an english teacher, who taught english to spanish speaking residents in Alabama.

The teacher had said a mexican woman told her that she knew a man by the name of "John" (she would not give his real name) "John could not find his children, they were carried away by the storm."

After hearing this story, it made me realize how this natural disaster and others have an unimaginable hardship to undocumented workers. They can't go to the authorities to get help when they are in dire straits. It really is a national tragedy how we treat immigrants in this country.

1. Since we've hardly heard anything about the victims they are pretty much all unspoken.

2. I've pretty much been in a news black out
No TV or internet till today. I had a little bit of internet access at work. Most of my news has been from the radio and local web sites.

In my area a small town just 15 miles south of my home in GA was pretty much wiped out. I have inlaws without homes in Fort Paine Alabama area and I have co-workers that have found dead relatives in fields. It's really bad.

I have massive downed trees in the yard and a hole in my roof but I feel very fortunate that my home and family are safe.

3. Someone from AL did a post describing the destruction asking not to forget about them.
A bunch of us donated to the red cross and others. But we really didn't know the best way to help.

So much awfulness lately.
