Schumer calls for 'do not ride' list for Amtrak

NEW YORK (AP) - Sen. Charles Schumer is calling for better rail security now that the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound has turned up plans to attack trains in the U.S.

Schumer said Sunday that he will push for the creation of a "do not ride" list for Amtrak. The list would be similar to the no-fly list that keeps those suspected of terrorism from flying into or out of the United States.

13. The Senator from Wall Street strikes again
please let's primary him, he's too senior to get rid of in any other way and may be leading our Senate caucus if we don't do something

8. I was about to post the same damn thing.
Trains would have been the only way for a regular person to get across country w/o flying or taking days to drive to and fro if you could afford the gas/hotel/etc. But we are afeared so time to make us all safe with more meaningless security theater while lining the pockets of business for providing the service that violates us all.

4. Oh fer gawd's sakes...
ENOUGH! Show me any proof that we are safer for destroying our civil liberties and these kind of bureaucratic schemes that inevitably become rank with error and incompetence--thereby irreparably damaging more innocents than they are likely to serve as an effective deterrent.

6. It's a good idea because once a train leave the station....
...it is effectively isolated from both external attack and external rescue. So it's critically important to have a "do not ride" list for the trains.

They're not like buses, where some terrorist can blow up a bridge to take one down. Or pull up along side one with a gun and start shooting up the bus. Or plant a bomb by the side of the road and remote-detonate it, blasting the bus to smithereens. Or landing on the bus by helicopter and storming it in an assault.

Nope! Can't happen with a train! Their high speed, high altitude, and complete directional independence renders them immune from all external attacks!

Whew! I'm glad Chuckie is thinking.

10. I'm concerned about terrorists using our freeways. Maybe we need a "do not drive" list.
Plus a giant nekkid X-ray machine in everybody's driveway. If you're worried about cancer, we can start hiring your neighbor's kids to pat you down instead.

19. how about some security features for the rails themselves.
Wasn't that the threat? What good would it do if every passenger was screened and a train was derailed?

Does he want it done for commuter rails too??

Many more people ride on those on a daily basis, and they aint checkin ID's?

Could you imagine the commuter nightmare this would create?
