Poll question: Do you trust Facebook?
Lots of problems recently, now the data leak that they claim they fixed. It is part of our fabric now. What say you?

1. Pie.
I trust it as much as any corporation. I'm a huge FBer, I'm not surprised when they have privacy issues, and I understand that everything I put on it can be used against me. The payoff, for me, is bigger than the risk.

8. I'm like you...
I love Facebook and all social media in general. I do understand that people can use
it to spy. However, I'm careful about what I post. If the NSA thinks that my coffee-drinking
habits or the cute phrases that my kids say--are interesting reading...well, ok.

Like you, the FB benefits outweigh the rest for me.

I am always interested in what others have to say about FB, and I respect and understand why
others would not want a FB.

2. I guess my followup question is, "For what?"
Everything I put on there I try to make sure is OK if the whole world saw it.

5. sure, I trust them to do exactly what they have been doing all along :
collecting information that people are willing to give up about themselves and selling it to the highest bidder. they have some info on me...but nothing that someone could not find in about 30 seconds with a simple web search.

if you wouldn't shout it or show it on a street corner, why the hell would you put it on the Intertubes?

7. Not at all. I know of too many unfixed bugs..
It goes down way too frequently and easily, IMO the code base is very weak.

That said, I still use it to keep in contact with friends. I just don't use it as my personal photo album and I don't share any non-pubic information there.

10. Facebook has its uses.
I love animals. I have 3 big dogs and 4 cats. I have hooked up with some local rescue groups that I never would have known. I like to do transports for them when I can. I can't really foster because my home is already full of 'lifers'. Just don't post anything that you don't want given out. I don't trust them, but I'm having fun with the site.

11. No .... But who cares ?
I have a bunch of youtube links to NIN and Arcade Fire ...

They know I have 3 kids - They could find that out at City Hall ...

I am appalled at the lack of security by Facebook, primarily because it may affect others, but I do not put anything of 'value' out there ....

16. #1 reason why I don't have a Facebook account
#2 is I'm not interested in adding to the further enrichment of the assholes that created it.

19. Agreed 100%
If there's any validity to the movie I watched recently "Social Network", assholes is an understatement. I've still been asking the question, "Why didn't the creators of MySpace sue the living shit out of those pricks"? Nothing Zuckerberg did was truly an "original idea". In fact the name "Face Book" was what Harvard was calling their student directories for each of their campus houses.

17. Unless Big Brother wants to know where I went hiking and where I went to college,
I have nothing to worry about. I tend to leave personal stuff off of facebook outside of pics from my last hiking trip and random thoughts about whatever the latest current event is. Even then, if it's something I wouldn't tell my co-workers, I leave it OFF of facebook.

21. The government and big business already have too much info
about every one of us. If you have the illusion that you're under the radar, wake up, you're not.

However, anyone who joins a social network and willingly posts information about themselves is about as stupid as you can get.

Listen to me. The greatest weapon you can own in today's world is not a gun. It is anonymity.

IMO, anyone who feels the need to let the world know more about themselves is a fool of the highest magnitude.

25. Not on your life.
Never trust a source who is doing implicitly what you as a people protested vociferously when introduced as a government program. T.otal I.nformation A.wareness was lambasted upon its' discovery. A few years later, people do it willingly, for free, without input.

27. I don't know how to answer that.
I use FB, but not religiously. I use it mostly for political rants and to keep fam/friends posted on my kid and the husband's bands. If I were thinking of taking over the government, probably not, but for what I use it for, sure.

You get what you pay for.

I enjoy the, "I would NEVER use a social networking site!!!" rants when DU is just a few paces away from being just that. If you don't think what you say/type here can be traced back to the safety of your home/work (no fault of the DU Lords and Ladies), there's a reality check in the mail.
