My hubby is about to walk in the door!! |
|
The dog will go crazy when she hears the key in the lock. She will jump up and down, wag her tail whimper a little bit (he likes to tease the dog so he takes foreeeeeever to open the door). The cats also come running so there is a whole line of pets waiting to say hello. He'll force his way in, jumping through pets, trying not to let the cats out. I just kind of sit back and wait a minute until they are done mauling him. It's pretty funny to watch. After they are all settled I'll follow him into the kitchen while he washes his hands (As a joke I usually tell him, "Don't even think about touching me with those bus hands!") Then we kiss hello, we talk about making tea or coffee, what's for dinner, glass of wine? juice? He'll go change while I start dinner.
I'll try to figure out a way to make vegetables appealing and today we're having tofu kielbasa thingies he picked out at the store. Since he doesn't cook he will pick these odd things I have no idea what to do with. I accept blame since I tricked him into going grocery shopping at the organic grocery...the old "we don't have anything sweet to eat...this place has a good bakery" always works. He thought he was getting a donut...I made him go pick out some dinner choices. Tofu kielbasas (he'd eat sausage every day if I'd let him) and broccoli. He will only eat broccoli and asparagus. As a kid he would sit at the table for hours if his mother tried to get him to eat anything but those two vegetables. He will eat fried potatoes and his favorite vegetable is now an onion. I will bet a good chunk of people reading this will nod their heads because they too have somehow become the family cook and know how hard a job it is!
We'll sit in front of the tv and eat dinner, talk about our day, play with the pets. I might tickle him a little because he hates it but I can't help it. We'll watch Antiques Roadshow because I like it and he can't find anything he actually likes, so I win. Then he'll surf around or pull up a Tosh.O show or we'll catch up on 30 Rock. A dog walk. We'll talk each other into putting the dishes off until tomorrow. Read on the couch or surf the web, both probably. He is reading ancient greek translations, I am halfway through a very dry book about this ancient egyptian city that dumped all its papyrus in a dump where it was preserved until being discovered last century. Mostly shopping lists and deeds and marriage contracts...that everyday stuff is everywhere...but also pages of greek poetry and literature. They have found works that had been completely lost to time. Then it will be time to start getting ready for bed.
That's pretty much it. That's what us married gay couples do in the evening. Just thought I'd share it.

he works too much and too many days. we dont get his cooking often. i dont like for him to come home and cook but there are a few i wont do. i love his chinese, especially chicken fried rice. i will have everything ready and cut and he just has to put it together and cook. i try for the weekend. or a yummy mushroom sauce on the steaks.
i get your point though, and as fun as this is, the big thing.... really, why the deal. let it go and let it be. i have two gay brother in laws. one of them gets the kids to raise if we die. i can think of no one better for them at that time in their lives and with this man.

I had kinda high expectations of how I thought things should be...and then my hubby asked me on a date. I was skeptical but he totally charmed me. A month or two into things he said, "i'd be more surprised if we didn't get married than if we did". We're working on four years and we've yet to even raise our voices to each other. (though he does get a little testy about the tickling sometimes) We've never had a fight.
I am a very lucky fellow. I only have one regret (but it is a doozie). He asked me out ten years prior to our first date and I laughed at him because I thought he was waaaaaay to young for me. Ten years later he got up the nerve to ask me again and we've been pretty inseparable ever since.
He sends me postcards several times a week so he can greet me when I get home from work. :0)

on the dogs. We run a shelter of sorts out of the home. We are near a hunting area, and the folks from up north bring the beagles and when they are unfit or unneeded, they are let loose to roam - hungry and injured. We take them in, and keep them from the SPSA, at times which is hasty in putting them down. They are always happy to hear me pull up, and greet me - old and new, at the door. Just sayin.... Wife on the other hand.... HAHA... Sometimes she is waiting for me. Sometimes I am waiting for her.

132. My mom liked him from day one...she made him a quilt. |
|
When he and I were first dating I was singing in a choir and both he and my mom were going to go to a concert. He is very shy, my mom is hilarious and has no boundaries. So...only six weeks or so after we started dating he and my mom met up outside the concert hall, without me there, and they spent the next two hours hanging out. I had left each of them a card on their seats--the one to mike was warning him about my mom--my mom's told was telling her to behave--I gave them conversation starters for each other (funny ones to break the ice) so they sat there and laughed (I was watching from behind a curtain) and they just hit it off.
By the time the concert was over and I met up with them, they were old friends and I had completely got to skip the whole ordeal of introducing them and having to lead the conversation all night.
The next time my mom saw him they hugged and chatted and my mom gave him an amazing quilt.

I love chocolate too, so i could never be vegan. I'm not a strict Vegetarian anymore. I eat meat 3 or 4 times a year, becoming more of a local-vore (or local-tarian) as i settle into my rural community and make farmer friends. I'm a cook and leatherworker, so i've never been grossed out by it, i just objected to the industrial practice of farming and the treatment of the animals while they live.
Cheers...

My wife has tried to feed me tofu for years, but I would have none of it. THEN, they brought out this "firm tofu". I love it.
I use a dried version for cooking when there is no meat and for some dishes, you don't really miss the meat, like in stews or spaghetti sauce.
Which is better for the earth, so I'm told.

Thanks for a beautiful little vignette. Gay family values are no different than straight family values. We come home, we kiss, we eat, we talk and we go to bed. Then we get up and do it again. How vicious is the "gay agenda".

|
Edited on Mon May-16-11 09:02 PM by Broderick
not really meaningful other than just for the sake of arguments. Not at that moment it seems that way, but upon reflection. Sometimes it is just based on the others stress or mutual stress outside the relationship. Upon reflection, it ends up being something silly we laugh about. I don't think it is abnormal. I think it is the nature of being around the same person for years. Doesn't matter orientation, more just being around the same people all the time - family and friends, etc too. Just normal to me. If you never argue, or fight as I said which embellishes on the meaning I meant to convey, then you are truly different than the people I have experience with directly or indirectly in their relationships.

People defy stereotypes. My partner and I both had distant fathers and strong mothers who fought. We both avoid conflict and confrontation because we grew up surrounded by it and it left us both miserable. Luckily we share opinions on almost everything and our relationship has been rock solid for two decades.
I also picked him up on his first night out at a gay bar after an 18 year marriage. Talk about "on the rebound", But it worked for us.

43. I would call that a perfect combo |
|
Best friends and lovers and companions. Sometimes similar backgrounds makes for the axiom in reverse, opposites attract; but attraction is so little in the equation of a good relationship. Companionship and friendship is far more important I believe. Attraction gets all muddled in love feelings and attraction gets mixed up with feelings. Have someone you are attracted to melt you with a kiss right off that bat. Meet your perfect mate and many times the most important things are thrown aside because it is awkward.... When a first attraction works longterm, I think it is uncommon. Most of the time, it takes much more to find out the truly important qualities of a great relationship. Sounds like you hit the lottery, by first being attracted and developing something really special that transcends that initial attraction. I love that.

We're both retired now so we have time to enjoy life and we do. No we don't have much money but who cares? We have each other-thats more than I ever hoped for.
I told my boss the day after I met my partner for the first time that I had found the person I would spend the rest of my life with. I just knew. She thought I was crazy. I can't believe my luck but I don't question karma. Its been good to me.

I have it on good authority that at your waking hours, as a gay couple, are filled with insatiable lust, pedophilia, bestiality, and hourly hot tub orgies with illegal immigrants, broken only by drinking wheat-germ smoothies, crunching granola, and smoking pot.
Are you saying that the talking Republican heads on TV might have exaggerated a mite?

Lately most of my reading is in the field of brain research for laypersons. Oliver Sacks "The Mind's Eye" was one of my Christmas presents. I also study biology for the fun of it. I love biology.

I was really irritable yesterday and found out why today. Found out from a doc that what I thought were very bad mosquito bites are likely pretty serious spider bites. I'm feverish, lethargic, irritable and generally out of sorts. He put me on two antibiotics so hopefully in a few days this shit will pass. Til then I''m gonna try to limit my posts to avoid alienating the entire board.
Got the bites while camping in north Alabama 10 days ago....
Always glad to hear from one of my favorite all-time DUers!

I have to state for the record that no one said "Oh HELL no" when I asked about putting it in the grocery basket, so I thought we'd at least give them a try. But our final verdict is that tofu kielbasa is, regrettably, disgusting.

It's a city called Oxyrhynchus. Apparently there was either a canal or a side branch of the Nile that flowed through town in antiquity but later silted up or the sand moved in. Their garbage dump, now a big sandbox, preserved a lot of stuff.
In terms of the actual writings they've found (although they found some texts that everyone thought were lost to time), the shopping lists, contracts, horoscopes, etc., are kinda interesting. They provide a peek into ordinary people's ordinary lives during the Hellenistic and Roman eras in ways that we have no way of knowing in other parts of these empires.
It's pretty cool, but I don't think much has been written about it for the general public - I think a lot of what's discovered can only get published in academic journals....

Certainly there was a school or civic organization meeting that needed to be covered for recruiting. Failing that, where is the hour or so required daily to go door-to-door to find new blood?
In all seriousness, that sounds like a pretty boring evening, which is about right.

Man, I wished my marriage was like that. When grumpy (kidding) gets home, sometimes he just needs to argue for the sake of arguing. We've been married for 4.5 yrs now and we're starting to learn enough about each other that we can recognize a bad mood or hurt feelings quicker in order to stop the bickering. If it's hot and humid, I know to look for snappy sarcastic comebacks and make concessions to accommodate his intolerance of heat and humidity. When I've been stressed about events coming up, he knows to offer some kind support to ease my pain.
And the key to our success is one of Dr. Phil's relationship tips. Hear me out. A woman has 10,000 words to speak a day, and a man 2,000. If I don't get those 10k words out, I about explode. He talks all day at work so he's plum used up when he gets home. He gets it now and I feel better after being home alone all day.
Thanks for your story. I think you should post that out to your local 'voice of the people' columns.

I don't know why we don't argue. I snapped at him once and he had this hurt look on his face that I hadn't seen before...and I HATED that I put that look in his face. He's just so sweet and mellow but if something is bothering him he just wants to share it and it is done. All calm and nicely done.
I have an ex who liked to pick fights for no reason. He just wanted a reason to rant and yell...I kicked that to the curb real fast.

We are hetero. We only have one dog and one cat but they want their greeting when we come in. They also want their 'good morning' lovin'. We watch Antiques Roadshow. We usually have it on DVR so we don't miss Rachel Maddow. We also read together.

We were only supposed to have ONE cat but my hubby is a soft touch. He is always bringing home very sickly pets. Our last cat had one tooth and weighed 7 pounds when he came home from the pound. Our newer one has...digestive issues. Horrible horrible digestive issues. If only cats could wear diapers!

I have always believed it to be a blessing if two people can share their lives and be happy together.. No one wants to go through life alone.... And no one want to die alone either......

I totally wouldn't want to die alone...but then I think of my husband and I would much more hate for him to die alone... so I intend to outlive him, but not by very much :0)

You've completely undermined my straight marriage! Damn you for being . . . uh, regular normal human-being type people. But it's all part of your diabolical plot, right? Next time, be sure to include the part where you sit around planning how to carry out your "gay agenda." And especially include if you can get your husband to eat any veggies, because it's the same around our house. He'd eat nothing but meat, meat, more meat (real, not tofu) and potatoes if I didn't spoon something green onto his plate, with my best "you're going to eat at least a LITTLE of this" look.

|
I say, "really? you're gonna complain about a tiny little salad like that?" (very scornfully)
so he eats it but leaves the ONE tiny little grape tomato to make his point.

It's possible to make really delicious tofu. And it's possible to be vegetarian and fat... living proof right here.

122. Love this story! Being heterosexual my thought is, I don't have this kind of relationship fortune... |
|
Still working on that for myself. If someone else already has it, wow! They are there to encourage me that I can have it too. And if someone else doesn't like it because the couple in the story happens to be of the same sex, what is that about? Then I think: jealousy. My deepest feeling says, if they had it themselves they would be too happy to object to anyone else's happiness.
(And P.S. if he's eating broccoli I think he's doing great health wise!)

how the hell did you gwet 1000 plus posts since 4/11? I'm still in 400's. Loved this post. Mr. Yankeepants and I had (his)fresh caught perch and fresh picked asparagas for din din and I heard my dead father say "What are the poor people doing tonight?" It was something he said when we were having the best meal off the land. We were the po' folk but eating like that made us feel rich.
It is the simple day-to-day richness that fleshes out our lives. All best, yankeepants

I don't have gazillions of original posts (and usually they are just links to good articles) but then I get in the mood to share something and out pops one of these types of posts). But I do comment on posts I like...i figure that bumps them up for more people to read.

Surely you're hooked on something like "Swamp People" and don't want to tell us. And at least one cat must have barfed a hairball just as the tofu kielbasa was being served.

|
we call him diahria cat...he eats $48 a bag hypoallergenic cat food made out of peas and rabbits. If we don't buy him that food he poops. A lot. Sometimes explosively. It is horrible and the worst part of our life! but he is really cute and we love him anyway.

167. I've always believed that the secret to happiness is the ability to read together for hours. |
|
Not reading the same thing, but to have that companionable silence. To me, it speaks volumes for both closeness and independence. (Then you talk a little bit about what you just read to each other. Then you have the wild monkey sex.)
This is beautiful and made me get a little misty. And I'm glad it didn't get bumped straight to the GLBT forum, because it's the kind of thing that everyone should read. And I'm glad it has so many recs and replies, because we can't be all rage against injustice all the time--we also need vivid reminders of what it is we're FOR, to give us strength and lift us up. Thank you.
