I won.

I just got a phone call, informing me that I won the election for a seat on the local school board. Although I live in a heavily republican area, where no Democrat has been elected to school/village/or town boards in longer than I can recall, I defeated the Tea Party incumbent.

It is important for members of the Democratic Left to run for local office. This is a start for me. When my youngest graduates, I'll run for a state office. Who knows what can happen. But I'm just one person in one isolated region. We need lots more people to do the same type of thing, in towns and cities across the country. Only then will we have the proper foundation to build a national movement upon.

My younger son/campaign manager dropped off two books by Michael Eric Dyson this evening. Suppose that I'll sit down and start reading them now.

You are so right about regular (to me...lol) people getting involved in local politics. As a Union member, we were reminded of this often. I always volunteered in my community and I was once asked to run for City Council, in my small (then) town. I regret not having run, but I was going through a divorce...etc.. It is never too late and I may run before long.

That is where real changes occur. The ones that affect the lives of our local citizens. It may change some viewpoints locally, so that when they vote on state and federal levels, they see things differently. Again congratulations.

188. The most thankless job on the planet. My wife was elected to a NH school board (3 year term).

In a subsequent election, one of the town assholes who ran on lowering taxes won by 13 votes over a guy who didn't even bother to campaign. His very first action was to propose increasing the stipend school board members receive. My wife, the "liberal", was the only one of the five to vote against the measure. She also gave birth to two children during that 3 years and nursed them during the meetings.

Anyway, do well and good luck dealing with the screaming assholes you'll have to deal with.

They determine everything from taxes to who gets hired and fired in a school district to how land is used in a municipality.

On my brother's first day on the County 4-H Fair board, the woman running concession stands for the fair requested $100,000 in reimbursement for equipment she claimed to have just purchased.

No receipt.
Didn't use a check.
Didn't use a credit card.

"Are you telling me you walked into the store with $100,000 in CASH?!?" replied my brother.

The board shouted him down and gave her the money. He took it to the State who said they can only do an audit if the County requests one, which they again refused.

Shortly thereafter the Sheriff Department, upon whose Peer Review Board the woman in question sits, arrested my brother for running a drug/burglary/prostitution ring. For three years he sat with no income awaiting trial. He finally ran out of money and was forced to accept a plea on possession of a marijuana residue so he could get back to work.

Working like crazy in local govt is probably the best thing a person can do, because it effects most of the ability of the public's tax base and keeps communities stronger.

My husband won his school board election along with two other gentlemen who had hoped they together would have a better chance to make real differences where we are. Now, their and your hard work begins.

Personally, I'm working my ass off in local government. It DOES make a difference, and what YOU learn will enable YOU to help the next person in your area. Pass it forward!
