If college and universities offered a 'Conservative Arts' degree, would
Edited on Wed May-18-11 10:03 PM by coalition_unwilling
Repukes agree to increased funding for public higher education?

From a letter to the editor in the online edition of "The Arizona Republic":

"After attending one of the university commencements this weekend, I was alarmed at the number of students receiving liberal-arts degrees. Now, I'm not an educated man, but even I can tell this is an egregious case of our tax dollars going to support a blatant political bias. We should demand our universities balance this out by offering a conservative-arts degree or threaten to pull public funding from our state schools. - Ernie Rheaume, Tucson

***********************************

I swear you can't make this shit up.

Of course, we would have to stop calling them 'Liberal Arts Colleges' I guess :)

Edited to ad the word 'higher' to the opening question.

1. How can you explain to someone like that
that there is no such thing as a conservative art?

"Ya know, that stuff is better than it sounds."

No, sir. You are not. There is precisely ONE factual thing in your comment.

It's astounding how much education is run and influenced by the non-educated.

Is the AZ Register generally considered a progressive paper? Otherwise, they MIGHT take this up as a "serious issue"

11. I think it's the AZ Republic (not Register). I have no idea as to how
it tends politically. I think it considers itself professional journalism, hence supposedly neutral. But not sure.

12. Oops.
But still, if it's a real journalism kind of paper, you may be right.

I give a lot of credit to real editors. They're educated.

15. Pretty sure about the AZ Republic's bend.
From my time there, I remember being frustrated with the editorials and opinion pages quite often. And there was a slight bias in the news pages. Generally they tended to be relatively moderately right leaning. However, that was more than 5 years ago before the state elected Mummy Brewer as gov...they may have followed the party and drifted farther right...

26. You probably remember EJ Montini then. He's been relegated to
the back of the State section, one column and I don't even think it's daily anymore.

It's gotten worse; I long ago cancelled my subscription.

6. If a liberal arts degree is about learning a little about a lot of different things.
The conservative arts degree would be about learning a lot about nothing.

7. Have to wonder though...
I did live in AZ for a while (long enough to become convinced that the sun will boil brains into conserva-zombies) and I heard more than my fair share of lunacy, but I have to wonder if he was deliberately being obtuse for the sake of pointing out the absurd victim mentality of the Rethug/teabag mind. But then again, considering some of the verbal manure that spews forth from the likes of the party leaders like Blechman and Failin one shouldn't be surprised if comments like this are real....

9. Yeah, at first I thought the writer might be a brilliant satirist. of
Swiftian dimensions. I guess that is possible, but somehow I doubt it in the land of McInsane.

13. Ohhhh Swiftian...how literary!
+10000 for you!

I love me some good Swift satire. I got into trouble every single year when I would have my students read A Modest Proposal and when no one would have the temerity to agree with it for the sake of classroom debate, I would just to make them think critically and actually defend their positions instead of just saying, "But eating babies is wrong!" Never failed that I'd get at least one student who didn't understand the lesson in satire and my attempts to show the effectiveness of Swift's (or any good satire) and would tell their parent(s) that I said eating babies was the right thing to do.

18. They're like the 'Dark Arts' (for Harry Potter fans) - from the same
folks who gave us the Downing Street Memo (where intelligence was made to fit the policy) and from the Leo Strauss devotees like Paul Wolfowitz, where the democratic populace must be lied to in the interests of serving a 'higher truth' to which only the devotees are privy.

Yeah, my sister just pointed that out to me a few minutes ago, that Liberty University has some odd degrees, also.

They have "law degrees" also. I'm surprised Ann Coulter didn't go there.

Where do I even begin? The science of proving pi=3? Proving the earth is flat because Jesus ascended straight up into heaven, not sideways? I'm telling you, there is a bunch of hard science in praying and caroling!

just plain cretinous thing I have ever read. This verges on science fiction.

You just can't fix stupid and this is more proof. How can somebody so manifestly ignorant have enough functioning brain cells to keep drawing breath??
