Botox Mom - "I made it all up for money"

Botox Mom: I MADE IT ALL UP FOR MONEY!
5/19/2011 7:00 AM PDT by TMZ Staff

The woman who went on "Good Morning America," claiming she injected her 8-year-old daughter with Botox, now swears under oath ... she made the entire story up for a few hundred bucks.

TMZ has obtained a sworn declaration written by Sheena Upton, who claims she was recently approached by the British tabloid, The Sun, and asked "to play the role of Kerry Campbell" for a story called "I Give My 8-Year-Old Daughter Botox."

Upton now confesses The Sun paid her $200 adding, "I was provided with the story, instructions and a script to follow for a recorded interview."

After the story ran in The Sun, Upton says she was approached by "Good Morning America" and "Inside Edition" and claims she was offered "a large fee" to appear on camera. She went on both shows and re-told her story.

The real story here, for our purposes anyways, is not about the botox injections and the daughter...but about the "news" making up stories and about how they blow up. GMA pays these people $10,000 for an interview?!?! That's why people like Balloon Boy's dad are trying to be famous and get their name out there is that there is a lot of money to be made in these goofy stories JUST for being on a news show talking about it. I could use $10,000 right now, hmmmmm.....

13. and the real investigation should be against the pimps in the media
If this is true -- there should be an investigation against the US shows willing to pay her money to do this on air.

11. She must have been really desperate for money.
There is no way I would perjure myself for only $200. It would have to be a hell of a lot more, like in the hundreds of thousands.

25. She didn't perjure herself
She posed for photos for a British tabloid, let them call her something else, and make up a story.

14. I don't even want to know what you drive if it takes $200 to fill the tank.
Even at $4/gal, I haven't hit $100 yet and I've got a fairly large tank.

6. I don't know that most of these shows can really be called "news" shows.
They are mostly gossip and entertainment with a little bit of news sprinkled around in an attempt to make them appear to be serious.

7. Geez. Random gossip on the net is more reliable than the MSM nowadays.

The declaration says her daughter doesn't even do beauty pageants.
Which seems reasonable since the girl doesn't look like the typical Shirley Temple clone.

15. I agree. I think the whole thing is just really sad in so many ways.
I am surprised by the callousness of some of the comments I have read. People are desperate. Really desperate. And dumb. She had no idea this could lead to her child getting taken away. Of that I am certain. She probably told her daughter that they were "acting". Is that right? OF COURSE NOT!!! But I go back to my original premise: Some people are desperate AND dumb. That's a sad combination

At this point, I'd rather see the DU community vilify the news outlets rather than this woman and her child.

12. P. T. Barnum would be excited by the ease with which a hoax is perpetuated today
People need to understand that just because it's on television or in print doesn't make it true. Television is all about ratings which generates sponsors and makes them money. Print media is all about copy sales which generates advertising and makes them money. Internet media is all about hits which generates advertisers or pay-per-click advertising. The point is it's all about making money, it's not about being truthful or accurate. The only way truth and accuracy comes into play is if viewers/readers stop patronizing the entities that don't value truth and accuracy. Instead, in today's market, people appear to be drawn more to the theatrical and less to the accurate. Which has led to an environment which our modern day P. T. Barnum's are exploiting to their financial advantages.

20. The mornings shows...
...are like watching a circus freak-show parade. And the stories are not news. They are personal life stories
about people who are down on their luck or people who have experienced tragedies. Then, there are the idiots
like this woman who do stupid things and get their "15 minutes" on these shows.

We get this steady dose of horrendous tragedy, crime and idiocy. So much of this is about violence, crimes and
people being vicious toward one another. It's bad behavior in the spotlight--with the families and people
involved in these heinous acts--more than happy to sit on the couch and spout off about their idiocy.

I can't even have these shows on in the morning because I don't want my kids thinking that this is "news" or any
kind of accurate representation of human events.

She went from level 8 to level 6 on the evil'O meter. 1 more point off and she gets to go to Limbo instead of Hell.

24. wow...talk about selling out for cheap...
GMA and the other morning shows need to be held accountable for this shit, because this is not the first time families with hoax stories (or at best highly questionable ones) have gone on unchallenged...

26. Reporter claims Upton has been demanding more money
Oh, what a cesspit Murdoch owns.

Alley Einstein, the British reporter who first reported on the Botox mom in March, says she definitely witnessed Sheena Upton inject her daughter with something from a bottle bearing a Botox label, she told RadarOnline.com.

“Could there have been something other than Botox in the bottle? Sure it’s possible,” Einstein said. “She’s just a ridiculous human being.”
...
Einstein now says Upton has been trying to extort money from her for weeks, threatening to let “all hell break loose” if she wasn’t sent money. In March, Einstein said she paid Upton $800 for her story, which first appeared in the British magazine Closer. The story was then picked up by the London newspaper The Sun before the GMA interview.

“This woman cannot be trusted,” Einstein said by telephone from England. “She’s been asking me for thousands of pounds or she’d go public. Needless to say, I didn’t pay her.”
