16. It's so obvious. The GOP is full of criminals in high places. If Dems.
continue to do little or nothing, our whole country will be lost -- and very soon.
What other conclusion can there be?

4. I guess I don't get why photo ID for voting is a bad idea. I don't want
RWers to be able to pull off voter fraud any more easily than they want us to.

7. The RIGHT WINGERS commit Election Fraud
with hacked computers and stuffed ballot bags, as we just had happen here. Election fraud is FAR more sweeping and threatening than Voter Fraud- which is when an individual voter tries to vote "illegally". It would take 1,000 individuals committing voter fraud to equal ONE act by ONE RW operative -think Kathy Nickolaus- who can change 1,000s of votes with one computer.

6. South Carolina's Governor signed the bill yesterday
Edited on Thu May-19-11 03:07 PM by SCantiGOP
Unclear yet as to whether they will appropriate money to the state election commission to provide IDs to people, but it will certainly stifle voting by the poor. Proponents couldn't document any cases where this would have prevented a fraudulent vote in the past.
On edit- the bill does have to pass DOJ clearance before it can be enforced, and many constitutional lawyers say that they may equate to a poll tax, which is of course illegal.

10. not really
It was obvious that it was going to pass, our legislature is 60+% GOP, so there was no need to get pissy about it. The Democrats were basically resigned to the fact that the issue will have to be settled by the DOJ or courts.

14. I don't have any problem with this - some things are important enough that ID is necessary
Try getting on an airplane or cashing a check without ID. In my book, voting is just as important.

15. That's the right wing talking point...
Edited on Thu May-19-11 05:55 PM by snacker
it's not the ID itself that's the problem...it's the difficulty in actually getting one for the elderly and poverty-level populations. There are not enough DMV offices in Wisconsin (some counties don't even have a DMV office--some people would have to drive over 70 miles one way), the hours are extremely limited (in a few northern counties, they are limited to 36 hours a year), many people would have a difficult time getting to the DMV offices (public transit is often not an option), many people without a birth certificate (needed to get the ID) would have to pay in order to get their birth certificate, etc.. I could go on...student IDs need to be changed, there is no voter education to inform voters of the changes, there are not mobile units (making it easier and more convenient for people to actually obtain their IDs....lots of issues and hoops to jump through the have not been addressed...

20. Sorry, I'm not buying that.. A balanced approach is possible.
A fair law would make it possible for someone to secure valid ID with a reasonable level of effort at little or no cost. The fact that a de minimis level of effort (e.g. having to get a copy of your birth certificate at your own expense) may be required to get the ID is not unreasonable. To make the law fair, the state would need to make some changes - maybe they need more hours; maybe they need a mobile unit in some cases. Standards can be established as to what accomodations the state should make and what is reasonable in terms of a level of effort to secure ID.

I believe in a totally honest, transparent voting process. That means honest machines and enough of them. It means rigid control of the ballots after the elections and a verifiable, foolproof paper trail. It also means a requirement that you prove your eligibility to vote in the election in question. The process should not be open to question as to whether anyone cheated, so even the potential for cheating should be eliminated.
