AUGUSTA, Maine — A bill to bar Maine officials from hiring family members, prompted by Gov. Paul LePage’s hiring of his daughter to work in his office, has been killed. snip

This bill would have required a governor, the Legislature and constitutional officers to hire and promote staff based on qualifications, and prohibit the hiring of family or household members.

1. An outright ban on family member is just as dumb as hiring them without qualifications..

How about the middle ground?? Hire them if they have the qualifications and they were selected in a fair and unbiased manner.

2. i agree with you, to an extent --

wouldn't the ban, by definition, provide for protection against abuse, or even the appearance of impropriety? maybe it could be interpreted as an overextension or overreach of government or what have you, but i guess i'm just a big gov't kid ... just one woman's opinion.
