Coffe union grown in the (Hawaii) USA on sale
Edited on Sun May-22-11 08:10 PM by Omaha Steve

Most coffee is grown in third world countries and the workers get very little for their labor.

Behind oil, COFFEE is the second most imported item into the US.

About Our Coffee
At 22 degrees North Latitude, Kauai has the ideal geographic location for growing coffee. Relatively cool evenings, light winds, and low cloud cover allow for the slow ripening of cherries. Kauai's soils are weathered, deep and slightly acidic-the perfect environment for coffee cultivation.

All processing by-products are reused. After filtering, factory water is applied back to the fields for irrigation. The cherry pulp mulch from pruning are returned to the fields as soil amendments, restoring nutrients and reducing weeds.

Water resources are reused. A efficient drip irrigation system applies water and fertilizers directly to the trees roots NO pesticides are used. Cultivation practices also have reduced the need for herbicides by 75%. 100% renewable energy. All power need are met by hydroelectricity.

The employees are all members of the ILWU and are among the highest paid coffee workers in the world.Employees receive a full range of benefits, including, dental, and retirement, for themselves and their families.

2. Lately I've noticed TV ads stressing "Made in America."
And when they say that, I try to pay attention.

7. The best Hawaiian coffee is Kona coffee...
...and here are two great sources, family farms who have been doing it for years. Kona is more expensive but there is a reason for that -- like Jamaican Blue Mountain, it is recognized as a top grade specialty coffee.

I have no affiliation with the above farms -- years ago I participated in the annual festival and cupping competition and got to know some of the local farmers. I've been to both farms and observed their growing, harvesting and processing methods. Old school, hand crafted, beans are harvested by hand over three or four cycles so that only the ripe red beans are picked and processed. It really does make a difference in the end product. I have ordered coffee from both and it's always great.

9. 13.95 for 10oz of coffee?
Ugh. I don't care how good it is. I can't afford it. I buy my coffee locally air roasted, sourced from Fair Trade beans. If i buy 5 lbs at a time, i can get it for around $8 a pound.

No affiliation. I just like their beans.

10. OK, you made me look
And buy. I've been to Kauai, some of the richest tasting coffee in the world. I remember bringing back some peaberry to the mainland, and it was the best part that lingered after my trip. I do recall it being fairly costly when my ex-girlfriend and I went to the coffee plantation.

Thanks for posting the coupon, I was able to get a 5 lb. sack of the dark roast, and some of that precious peaberry for just a shade over the $75, I do think it's a good deal. No, it's not what you can get at the supermarket, but this union worker's dollars will go to support other US union workers.

Thanks for posting this!
