The 10 Canine Commandments
Edited on Mon May-23-11 11:03 AM by Playinghardball
Recieved this from an email...

Sort of makes you think before getting a dog...

The 10 Canine Commandments
© Stan Rawlinson 1993

1. My life is likely to last ten to fifteen years. Any separation from
you will be painful for me. Remember that when you buy me.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me - it's cruicial for my well-being.

4. Don't be angry at me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment.
You have your work, your entertainment and your friends. I have
only you.

5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I
understand your voice when it's speaking to me.

6. Be aware of however you treat me, I'll never forget it.

7. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily
crush the bones in your hands, but that I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinant or lazy,
ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not
getting the right food, or I've been out in the sun or in the cold too
long, or my heart is getting old and weak.

9. Take care of me when I get old. You too, will grow old.

10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: 'I can't bear to watch
it', 'let it happen in my absence' or 'I am tired of you'. Everything is
easier for me if you are there. Remember, I love you.

3. My poor dog is still missing. I am still hoping that he returns.
This made me cry. It is storming out and the thought that he might be out in it means I let him down.

5. Do a good job raising a dog, and you will be handsomely rewarded.
For all the time and love and training and attention that you invest in your dog, you will be repaid accordingly.

7. #7 mentions hitting a dog.
There is never a reason to hit your dog. No matter what he she does.

9. I smacked my 8 week old pup on the bottom once when moving outside to pee

That's all he needed, He's a really smart dog.

Possibly something other than a perfectly timed swat could have worked as well. I'm open to suggestions for next time.

18. If you want to talk in absolutes, let us start a Bieber thread together
Never say Never blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda etc etc etc

20. Not possible.
One cannot talk about absolutes when also discussing this Bieber. Such as "I'll never buy something from this Bieber."

10. I've kept that hanging on my refridgerator door for a couple of years.
I had to have two dogs I'd had since pups, for 13 years put down 3 years ago and two years ago.

But, got two of the sweetest replacement rescue pups 21 months (Cream Lab-Springer), and 9 months ago (Black Lab-Golden).

17. Awwww, what beautiful dogs! And it looks like they're buddies...
I've had two dogs for a really long time, but it's so hard on the other when you lose one... And I've adopted senior dogs from rescue. My little Jack was inseparable from his "brother," bonded from day one, but we lost Charlie in 2009, hard on all of us... ;(

Jack and Charlie :loveya:

Since Charlie was his "brother" and BFF since he was a puppy, I've always wondered if Jack thinks he looks just like Charlie... :D

14. Thank you so much for this list...
...every night when I get in bed, my Scottie cuddles with me. It is our special time for her to get her ears scratched, her tummy rubbed and the curl up beside me while I whisper to her how much she means to me.

Dogs are so very special. The world would not be the same without these magnificent creatures.

19. Wow.
I'm watching a friends dog while she's out of town. Daisy's curled next to my chair right now. She isn't even my dog but she sure acts like it. I'm always a little intimidated by how much they trust us.

We have had many an old or incurably ill dog put to sleep, and we have always been there.

 my beloved 18 yr old sheltie mix died of a brain tumor just before Christmas last year. I miss him so much, will probably get another dog toward the fall. At this point though just thinking about another here in place of my little guy is just unimaginable. :-(
