The Economic Policy Institute’s recent report, The State of Working America, included this chart of poverty rates by age from 1959 until 2009.

Thanks in part to Medicare and Social Security, the poverty rates of elderly Americans has plummeted to historic lows. Unfortunately, the biggest increases are seen among young people under 18 years old, and even more dramatically with children under age 6.

Healthcare blogger Aaron Carroll writes:

Think about it. One in four children in the richest country in the world are in poverty. The next most prevalent group was children 6-18.
