1. The President has to pick his battles!! |

I think Obama knew the Patriot Act would be re-upped with little discussion. He has reduced the misuse and abuses of power under this act and he will continue to do so. Had he taken this issue on, when he is facing the repugs down on the privatization of SS and vouchering Medicare, it would have given them a platform to change the discussion away from the real republican agenda which is surfacing every day: enrich the rich, leave oil subsidies intact, hold the debt ceiling captive to "aiding the tornado victims" or "vouchering Medicare". He really has to pick his battles and I think he just let this pass for now. He is winding down Afghanistan, Iraq and trying to work with allies to save the libyan people.

2. Ah, the old "keeping his powder dry' canard. |
|
The Dems tried this under Bush, and that powder is still dry and unused.

Obama fully supports the Patriot Act and thinks that it has been a great tool for keeping America safe over the past decade. Those are his words. He has no desire to make this a battle because he, the dems, and the repubs are on the same side.
As long as he is in power, the Patriot Act will not be repealed. This isn't a matter of political expediency or strategy, its about what Obama and the dem leadership actually believe, and they believe that the Patriot Act is a good thing.

5. In the same way other government corruption is ok, in fact defended |

hereabouts depending on who is in power. Another great example currently is the corruption surrounding the BATFE and their sanctioned gun running and subsequent refusal to reveal who is responsible. There are some here who defend this nonsense too.
