Medea Benjamin is a Great Civil Libertarian

We owe our liberties to people willing to face arrest by standing up for them - people like Medea Benjamin. I don't know if any progressive colleges have awarded her an honorary doctorate, but she certainly deserves one. She's always there when it counts.

As the cameras are rolling in the Jefferson Memorial. Medea gives a workshop in how to present a civil rights arrest before a jury. She doesn't interfere with the cop; doesn't raise her voice; she just smiles and keeps on dancing. That puts the whole burden of the "disturbance" on the police. Anybody can tell from the video that she's not really bothering anybody; the facts speak for themselves.

Is is a big deal that anyone should quietly shuffle with a dance partner in the Jefferson Memorial? A prosecutor will have a tough time demonstrating that what Medea was doing was in any way "disorderly."

We're very lucky to have Medea Benjamin. Not only is she gutsy, she also has a good sense of strategy.
