I feel your east coast pain (heat), but my arse is freezing! (DIAL-UP WARNING)
Edited on Wed Jun-01-11 10:31 PM by DemoTex
I am watching the internet news about the heat wave in the
east & southeast. It's hard for me to imagine since I got caught in a wicked
snow storm yesterday (5/31/11) on Mt. Bachelor. Snow remains in the
forecast through Friday (80% chance above 5500 feet).

The Cascade Lakes Highway is still impassable (under several feet of
snow) between Elk Lake and Mt. Bachelor. The road is barricaded and
they haven't even thought about running the snow plows there yet.

I'm still hibernating at the guard station. It has become Act I of "The
Incredible Sameness of Being": cold, dark and wet. I am ready to get
back to the lookout tower (provided, of course, they get me a working
heater).

Here are some pics from yesterday's snow storm. We had another snow
storm today (6/1), but uploading pictures takes hours out here
in the wilds.

The snow started at Mt. Bachelor just as I arrived

This family offered me a sled, but I politely declined

I pulled over into a sno-park to make a plan

The temp was dropping rapidly. In 10 minutes it was 28-F.

By the time I got out of there, my truck had 2"+ of snow on it

I decided to head down the Cascade Lakes highway into Bend (all downhill) and into warmer temperatures and rain (good plan!)

I'm always glad to plug the great NPR (Progressive/Bluegrass) station from Spindale, NC - WNCW!

1. I do not envy you. Stupid Colorado just skipped spring and it's finally warmed up.
Worst winter ever (and people say "it's Colorado!", no I don't ever recall a winter being this cold and I've lived here ten years!).

13. The hard winters of decades ago returned to the Rockies. What happens in Oregon happens here

a few days later. Sweater days in the middle of winter are a thing of the past it seems. Anyhow, enjoy the warmer weather while it lasts. June, July, August. Then get ready for more snow.

I knew that. I got an email from a friend in DC who said that his car thermometer read 100 on the road.

Stay cool!

Mt. Bachelor today! Geez! I had no idea it was that cold there now. Brrrr....Stay warm Demo!!

It hit about 97 in the DFW metro today which is not totally abnormal for this time of year but a tad unusual this early.

10. Ironic, indeed ..
I talked with my doctor in Dallas today for a Rx I need out here. He could not believe I might have problems getting in from the wilderness, in snow, to pick up the prescription at the pharmacy. He said it was 100-F at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. But since the Rx is for a non-threatening condition, we both had a good laugh.

BTW: Mt. Bachelor is the best kept secret in winter sports. One can park in Bend and ride public transportation to the ski lifts. I think that is awesome!

14. Not surprised
It's been around 50 here on Puget Sound all day, with light rain. We've had the heat on. There will be no tomatoes in our garden this year.

18. Seattle here and out in it.
We're joking about how spring visited us a few weekends ago, guess we'll have a weekend of summer in a month or so.

I hope it's just El Nina. Or sunspots. Or something.

20. I'm just glad I keep a photo journal, every day, of the weather.
Unless you document it with pics (especially snow events in June!) people discount the report. But last season I had snow every day in June; snow flakes or more, seldom sticking snow. In 2009 Memorial Day was hot as hell and we had a 38 acre fire by noon.

In fact, when I am alone in the wilderness, I document EVERYTHING with a photo. CYA. Like this fire photo (one of a series of about 50 to CYA) after everyone though fire season was over last year (10/2/2010).

since the last one.

Seriously, though, this is effed up. Big time.

24. Nice!
I'll be travelling to Oregon in a few weeks to stay the summer - I am eternally grateful for the cool nights, regardless of how hot it gets during the day. I simply am not built for high heat.

Hope you stay warm and cozy - and drive carefully!
